The Citizen, 2012-11-01, Page 3THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2012. PAGE 3. Howson named Blyth’s Citizen of the Year
Steve Howson has been named the
winner of the Citizen of the Year
Award for Blyth and its surrounding
communities.
“Steve is truly what this [award]
represents. He is involved in the
community at almost every level,” a
nomination read. “Steve is a great
example of ‘giving of yourself’.”
Howson played an integral part in
organizing last December’s
fundraiser for Blyth’s Jim Johnston,
who was injured in last year’s
tornado that tore through Goderich,
Central Huron and Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh.
Howson worked alongside the
Johnston family and then the Blyth
Lions Club, of which he is the
treasurer, before the event could take
place.
Howson’s list of volunteer
commitments is extensive and he has
been volunteering throughout the
community for over a quarter
century.Howson is the president of the
newly-amalgamated Blyth Brussels
Minor Hockey Association, he is the
treasurer of the Blyth Lions Club
and has been on the club’s executive
for over 15 years.
Howson has also coached hockey
in Blyth for years, a game he has
been around his whole life. He is
also a member of the Blyth Legion
and the Blyth Arena Board.
“Steve is one of the people who is
always there, working in the
background. He is one of those
volunteers who is usually silent and
behind the scenes, however, he is
there when needed, especially if it
involves kids, and not just for a
couple of hours, from start to finish,”
a nomination read. “He does not do
it for the recognition. He is a citizen
of Blyth.”
Howson was the unanimous
choice of a panel of the past five
winners of the Citizen of the Year
Award for Blyth and the surrounding
communities.
“Steve has Blyth’s best interest atheart and truly deserves the honour
of ‘Citizen of the Year’,” a
nomination read.
When he was told he has won the
award, Howson said he was “quite
honoured” to hear the news, saying it
was completely unexpected.
“I’ve been around hockey all my
life,” Howson said. “My son is still
involved and I still enjoy the game.”
Howson says he has been
coaching hockey in Blyth for over 20
years.
“I like seeing the kids progress,”
Howson said.
Howson is in his 25th year as a
member of the Blyth Lions Club,
where he spent two years as the
club’s president and is currently its
treasurer.
“I really enjoy the social aspect of
the club,” Howson said. “It’s a good
group of people.”
The group, which now has over 30
members, is a source of pride for
Howson.
“We just like helping the
community out,” he said. One of Howson’s pet projects is
the Blyth Lions Park, which is
something that will give many
visitors their first impression of
Blyth. He says he likes to see it well-
maintained.
Howson will be honoured with a
plaque presentation ceremony at a
later date.

For many years, the daughter of
Dr. McIntyre, a dentist who came to
Blyth in 1922 and served Blyth and
Auburn before moving to Clinton,
has kept in touch with The
Repository of Blyth History and the

memories of childhood days in our

The Christian’s vital breath!
(David Harsha, “The Saviour’s Intercession”)
“O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.”
Psalm 130:2
Prayer is the motion of our renewed hearts towards God.
Prayer lifts the soul unto Him in sweet and heavenly communion, ‘Unto You, O Lord,
do I lift up my soul.’
Prayer calls down upon us the choicest blessings of heaven.
Prayer brings our spirits near the throne of God, and fills them with inexpressible
delight.
Prayer elevates our views and affections far above this world of sensual and perishing
enjoyments.
Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath!
No true child of God can live without prayer.
If we have the spirit of adoption, we will be often crying, ‘Abba, Father!’
‘O God, You are my God; early will I seek You. My soul thirsts for You; my flesh
longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1
