wants to get the word out that they
are able to help and always looking
for volunteers and donations.
Chairperson of the Food Share
Gord Kaster and operations manager
Joyce Johnston spoke to North
Huron Township Council on Oct. 14.
Kaster introduced the
organization, stating that they were
established in 1995, have a board of
directors with 12 positions, 11 of
which are currently filled. The Food
Share is registered as a non-profit
organization run completely by
volunteers.
“We’ve found that people have
been questioning that, asking how
much money goes to helping the
food bank and how much goes to the
people running it,” he said. “We
don’t get any money, donations do
two things, they cover our costs and
buy food for the Food Share, I would
say that 95 cents of every dollar
donated goes towards buying food.”The Food Share, which is locatedbehind Petropolis in Wingham, exists, according to Kaster, because
of the generosity of the community,
and highlighted the group’s landlord,
Doug Kuvenhoven, as someone who
helps a great deal.
“Our landlord rents us the
property at a minimal price and
returns our rent as a donation for a
tax receipt,” he said. “It’s good
because we need the space and, next
to Goderich, I believe we have the
largest clientelle in all of Huron
County.”
That clintelle base should be
bigger, according to Kaster, who
says that many people don’t know
about the Food Share or are too
proud to use it.
“We service Blyth, Lucknow,
Brussels, Wroxeter, Gorrie,
Fordwich, Belmore, Teeswater and
Wingham and the surrounding
areas,” he said. “Pride is one of the
biggest things we need to get around
though.”
The only request the group had, other than asking that when councildid decide to support local charitiesthat the Food Share be kept in mind,
was that a link to their newly created
website be placed on the North
Huron Township website.
“We have a new website that was
put together between Doug, who
donated a computer system to us,
and my daughter Stephanie,” Kaster
explained. “We want to patch in to
the North Huron website. Our
website is updated every other day
with information and editorials and
we’re hoping to gain more exposure.
He said that, even though there are
barriers to people taking advantage
of the Food Share, the use of the
centre increased by 17 per cent last
year and, in August alone, the Food
Share served 140 families, or about
400 clients.
“For a family of four, we can only
give $168 worth of food,” Kaster
said, pointing to a list he had
provided to council to show what
kind of foods that bought. “That
food comes from various locations, like donations of food and money.”He said that the summer, andimmediately after, were difficult
periods for the Food Share since
donations go down as schools aren’t
in, service clubs meet less and
people are away more often.
Events like food drives and localfundraisers keep the food in thecentre, however, even withdonations, the Food Share still spent
$40,000 on food last year.
Council agreed to help the Food
Share by linking their website on the
North Huron website.
