The Royal Canadian Legion
annual poppy campaign will begin
on Friday, Oct. 26 and conclude on
Nov. 11. The Brussels Branch 218
will conduct the town canvass on
Saturday morning, Oct. 27 with
assistance from the 2967 Brussels
Army Cadet Corp. Comrades are
asked to be at the Branch to help at
8:45 a.m. Drivers are needed to
transport Cadets to the farthest ends
of the village and to surrounding
small hamlets. They will be going
door to door to offer a poppy to
everyone. Donations are gratefully
accepted. Poppy boxes will also be
placed around town in various
locations. All funds raised go to the
poppy account and there are very
specific guidelines for disbursement
and use of funds as set out by
Dominion Command of the RCL.Veterans comfort and support ofveterans are the foremost prioritiesfor the funds. Thank you in advance
for supporting the RLP poppy
canvass.
The poppy has been widely
recognized as a symbol of
Remembrance, since it was first
adopted in 1921. By wearing a
poppy, we demonstrate our gratitude
to those who gave their lives for the
freedom we enjoy. Over 66,000.
Canadians died during the First
World War. Simple wooden crosses
marked their graves and soon bright
red poppies grew among them.
Canadian Army Doctor, John
McCrae made the poppies famous in
his poem In Flanders Fields. Today
the poppy is still worn as the symbol
of Remembrance. The poppy is worn
on the left lapel above the heart. A
reminder to keep those who have
fallen, in our heart and prayers
and that “We Will Remember
Them.”
Comrades Glenn Bridge and Cecil
Moore are looking for any men out
there who would be interested in
playing crib some afternoon at the
Branch for the winter. Nothing
fancy, just an afternoon of play. If
you would be interested, call Glenn
at 519-887-6106 or Cecil at 519-
887-8511 to find out what day
would suit best

Regardless of what the various
bills are called when and if they are
tabled under a new government, the
main issues affecting Ontario farm
families will not be forgotten.
Respect for the environment
including farmland and soils, fair
treatment of farmers and farm
businesses and the development of
partnerships that help rural Ontario
thrive will always be priorities for
the OFA. The Ontario legislators
may not be sitting, but Ontario farm
families still have the opportunity to
make sure elected officials
understand our messages and are
equipped with the information
required to craft sound legislation
moving forward.
Farm families should keep
talking to prorogued MPPs

On Saturday night the community was shocked to find a
new brand of butcher in the Blyth area as the 10th annual
Blyth Witches Walk was held on the Blyth Greenway Trail.

cutting up more than salami slices on the trail. (Jim Brown
