Ironmen earn two wins, jump into second place
The Wingham Ironmen won two
of three games played over the
weekend to grab a share of second
place in the Western Junior C
Hockey League with the Kincardine
Bulldogs and the Mitchell Hawks.
Playing at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on
Friday evening, the Ironmen needed
overtime to get past the tough
Mitchell Hawks 4-3. The four-game
winning streak of the Ironmen came
to halt Saturday evening as the team
fell 5-3 to the Kincardine Bulldogs
at the Davidson Centre. At the
Maitland Recreation Centre in
Goderich on Sunday afternoon, the
Ironmen coasted to a 7-3 decision
over the Sailors.
The Ironmen traded goals with the
Hawks through regulation time.
Aaron Armstrong opened the
scoring for the Ironmen, with
Brayden Pellett earning the assist. B.
Rae tied the score for Mitchell.
Drew Gross made it 2-1 in the
second period with help from
Armstrong and Travis Donaldson.
N. Templeman tied the game for
Mitchell. Dylan Williams gave
Wingham a 3-2 advantage before the
end of the second period. J. Ennet
tied the game for Mitchell in the
third period.
At the three-minute mark of the
five minute overtime period, Gross
netted the winning tally.
Wingham coach Russ Sutton said
it was an excellent hockey game.
“That was one of the best games
we’ve played all year, actually,” he
said. “We had to play defence and
the offence part, but that was a
hockey game.”
He said the Ironmen started a bit
quicker in the game against Mitchell
two weeks previous.
“Mitchell came to play hockey
tonight,” he said, “They wanted to
get back at us for the game that we
had with them a couple of weeks
ago. They dug deep and they wanted
it just as bad.”
Wingham was fortunate to get the
winning goal by Drew Gross.
Assistant captain Joey Terwoord
said the Ironmen played a real good
game.
“We wanted to come in and get the
two big points,” he said. “We did
that. It was a bit scary near the end,
we thought they might score, but in
the end we pulled it out.”
Terwoord agreed with the coach in
that the Ironmen got off to a better
start in the game two weeks
previous.
“I think we scored three times in
the first five minutes and took right
out of the game,” he said, “Tonight,
we got off to a bit of a slow start,
scored early, but kept letting them
back in it and we didn’t capitalize
(on our chances) when we had
them.”
In Kincardine on Saturday night,
the Bulldogs took a 5-1 lead in the
first period and then held off the
Ironmen. Wingham outshot
Kincardine 43-31 and were 0-7 on
the power play.
Armstrong scored two goals for
the Ironmen and Justin Jacklin
chipped in with one. Receiving one
assist apiece were Donaldson,
Terwoord, Blair Goss and Josh
Stewart. Cody Britton had two goals
for the Bulldogs.
The Ironmen took a 4-0 lead on
Sunday as they skated to a victory
over Goderich.
Armstrong paced the attack with
two goals and two assists. Derek
Elliott netted a pair of goals.
Terwoord had a goal and an assist
with single markers tallied by
Jacklin and Williams. Drew Shantz
received three assists with Matt
McCracken, Goss and Donaldson
picking up two helpers apiece.
Receiving one assist each were
Pellett and Brett Brophy.
Jacob McDougall scored two
goals for the Sailors. The Ironmen
outshot the Sailors 37-25 and were
4-11 on the power play.
The Ironmen play two games at
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex this weekend.
On Friday, they take on the
Kincardine Bulldogs, beginning at
7:30 p.m. and then on Sunday they
play the Mitchell Hawks, beginning
at 4 p.m.

Burgundy team stays undefeated
The Blyth Brussels Atom Local

Goderich on Oct. 20 at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre
and extended their undefeated streak
to three games.
The Burgundy team managed a 9-
0 shutout against the Sailors 1.
Previously the team faced off
against BCH in Clinton and came
away with a 2-2 tie.
The team’s season and home
opener was against Lucknow on
Oct. 13 at home and the Blyth
Brussels squad came away with a

After a couple of slow shifts the
team figured each other out and
managed to put some goals in the
net.
