The Citizen, 2012-10-25, Page 3THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2012. PAGE 3. Love flowing out in little gentlenesses (J.R. Miller, “Daily Bible Readings in the Life of Christ” 1890) “I tell you the truth, anyone who give you a cup of water in My name because you belong to Christ--will certainly not lose his reward!” Mark 9:41 It seems indeed astonishing--that God should keep note of such a little thing, as the giving of a cup of water to a thirsty Christian. It shows how dear to Him His people are- -since the smallest things done to one of them--He accepts, remembers, and rewards. The mention here of the giving of a cup of water suggests that this promise is for little, commonplace acts--rather than for great showy deeds. We are too stingy with our helpfulness. God has put His gifts of love into our hearts--not to be kept locked up and useless--but to be given out. We would call a man selfish--who would refuse a cup of water to one who was thirsty; yet many of us do this continually. It is the heart which ‘thirsts’--and the ‘water’ we refuse to give, is human kindness. Kindness is just the word for these small acts. Kindness is simply love flowing out in little gentlenesses. We ought to live our lives--so that they will be perpetual blessings wherever we go. All that we need for such a ministry--is a heart full of love for Christ; for if we truly love Christ--we shall also love our fellow-men; and love will always find ways of helping. A heart filled with gentleness--cannot be miserly of its blessings. A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 Better Water NOW! 519-379-9765 Rick Dupuis Say: UCW group, members recognized at United Church Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on anniversary Sunday, Oct. 21 were Bev Elliott and Donna Moore. Ushering were Karen Glousher, Rob Mason, Lavern Clark and Brenda Brooks. Floyd Herman was music director and Connor Brooks and Greg McDonald ran the power point. Rev. Gary Clark welcomed everyone to this anniversary Sunday and also the 50th anniversary of the UCW. He drew everyone’s attention to the announcements with special mention that the ladies are making beef pies on Oct. 31. Call Joann at 519-523-9247 if you wish to order. He also reminded everyone that the fall supper is on Oct. 27. Call any member of the stewards for tickets. The call to worship was the singing of “All Who are Thirsty and This is the Day”. The prayer of approach was repeated responsively with sign language in the response. The hymn “Over My Head” was sung. The scripture was from Acts 9: 36-42. As part of the UCW’s 50thanniversary service three membersof the UCW were honoured as theywere part of the first UCW in Blyth United Church. They were Enid MacDonald, Grace McNichol and Joann MacDonald. Logan Chalmers, Michelle McNichol and Tressa Bibok read a part honouring the UCW and the honoured guests lit a candle for each reading while the girls placed them on the altar table. The honoured guests were presented with a bouquet of yellow roses by members of the UCW Gwen Papple, Shirley Giilick and Myrtle Badley. Rev. Clark asked the children to come forward and he asked them if they knew what had just happened by honouring the UCW members. He also asked them what kind of a party they would have with candles on a cake. He told them that the UCW was celebrating 50 years and there would be cake after church. The children went down to Sunday School and their time of fellowship. The choir sang the anthem, “How Can I Keep From Singing” and dedicated it to the UCW. The anthem was an old hymn rewritten six years ago. Rev. Clark’s message to the congregation was “Women Who Serve, The diaconal Ministry”. Women were not allowed to serve on church boards years ago, but the women wanted to be heard. The women of the church 50 years ago formed the UCW from two groups that were the Women’s Association and the Women’sMissionary Group. Anniversary is atime of change. The UCW raises thousands of dollars to support their local church and also hundreds of thousands Canadawide. They also show their love by sharing their money, time and talents with people outside the church and community. They care by showing their love for others. The UCW is the heart of the church. The scriptures tell of an amazing woman called Tabitha. When Tabitha died the people didn’t know how they would replace her. She listened to the people she was helping. Peter was called to help in the crisis. Not everyone can take a position and we look for someone who is called to serve. We need someone to tell us to believe and will tell us it will get better tomorrow. Someone who cares is Resurrection of Hope. The next hymn, “The Lord of Sea and Sky” was sung followed by thereceiving of the offering, theoffertory response, “What Can I Do”and the offertory prayer. Emily Phillips, a member of the UCW led the prayers for the people. The last hymn, “The Church is One Foundation” was followed by the commissioning and benediction.Rev. Clark said grace andeveryone was invited to stay forlunch. The free-will offering was being sent to help fund the midwife training in Tanzania. The anniversary cake was cut by the three honoured guests.
