THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2012.HELEN BRAY Helen (Smalldon) Bray of Brussels passed away at Huronlea Home for the Aged, Brussels on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012. Born in Grey Township on March 16, 1926, Helen was in her 87th year. Helen was the beloved wife of the late Ken Bray (Aug. 1, 1991) and will be sadly missed by her children Shirley Hunter and her husband Stewart of Atwood and Janis Bray of New Hamburg. She was a loving grandmother to Krista, Mark and Ashley, Ron and great-grandmother of Leah. Helen was the sister of Maxine Armstrong and her late husband Bill of Fergus and sister-in- law to Priscilla Bray of Fordwich. Helen was predeceased by her son Larry and grandchildren Stacey, Kent and Shelley. Friends were received by the family prior to the funeral service which was held Friday, Oct. 5 from the Schimanski Family Funeral Home. Pastor Sandra Cable of Brussels United Church officiated. She was 92. The former Shirley MacLean was the beloved wife of the late John Donaldson who predeceased her in 1993. She was the loving mother of John Donaldson, Wingham and Nancy and Ralph Campbell, RR 3, Blyth, the dear grandmother of Heather and Daniel Snell, RR 3, Blyth; Cheryl Campbell and friend Jeff Lanning, Byron and Kevin Campbell and friend Lindsay Steinback, Blyth and the cherished great-grandmother of Rachael, Joel and Jonathan Snell and Morgan, Wyatt and Jackson Campbell. Shirley was the sister of Bruce MacLean of Wingham and Vivian Westlake of Clinton and will be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Shirley was predeceased by her parents Albert and Bessie (Jackson) MacLean, sister-in-law Marie MacLean and brother-in-law Gordon Westlake. Visitation was held at McBurney Funeral Home Ltd., Wingham on Tuesday. The funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 17 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Rev. Bernard Skelding officiated. He was 66. Born in Brussels on Jan. 17, 1946, John served his community as a volunteer firefighter for 35 years (retiring two years ago). He operated John D. Pennington Heating and Cooling since 1976. John was the beloved husband of Bonnie (Workman) for 43 years. He will be sadly missed by his children Mark Pennington, Brussels and Lisa Pennington and her friend Paul, Lucknow and his grandchildren Daniel, Darian, Dustin, Raelyn, Christopher, Wyatt and Wade. He was the dear brother of Bonnie Jacklin and partner Mike Storozuk of Bluevale and Marlene Richmond Betts and husband Stephen, Kingston. He was also loved by his mother-in-law Isobel Workman of Brussels; brother-in-law Brian and Jo-Anne Workman, Brussels; sisters- in-law Donna and John Prtenjaca of Melrose and Jacquie and Paul Gowing, Bluevale and his many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents Jack and Mary (McLean) Pennington, his father-in-law Gordon Workman, his sister Beth McCauley and her husband Gerry, his brother Bruce in infancy and his brother-in-law Gary Richmond. Friends were received by the family Tuesday and Wednesday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home. The funeral service was held at St. John’s Anglican Church on Thursday, Oct. 18. Rev. Perry Chuipka officiated. Pallbearers were Ross Somers, Don McNeil, Jim Bosman, Carl Graber, Kyle Stephenson, Bill McGavin and Dave Wheeler. Interment is in Brussels Cemetery. Born in Clinton on Sept. 1, 1978, Jason was 34 years old. Jason was the beloved son of Valerie (Rose) and the late Bill Shortreed of RR 1, Walton. He was the dear brother of Matthew and Julie Shortreed, RR 1, Walton; Bradley Shortreed, Egmondville and Krista and Adam Verkley, Atwood. He was the loving uncle to Connor, dear grandson of Norma Rose of RR 5, Mitchell and the dear nephew of Rick and Margaret McInroy, Inverhuron; Judy and Warren Beuerman, Egmondville; Wendy Boyd and Mike, Waterloo; Sandra and Bruce Schmidt, Tavistock and Jamie Rose, RR 5, Mitchell. Jason was also loved by his cousins Michael, Melissa and J.C., Joleen and Greg. He was predeceased by his grandparents Wilfrid and Muriel Shortreed and Glen Rose. Friend will be received by the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home. Dr. Jane Rylett, a researcher with the Robarts Institute, will be speaking about the latest research concerning brain communication and the impact these changes have on aging and disease. Marge Dempsey, R.N. and former Clinical Director of the Alzheimer Society of Niagara, will discuss the benefits of the Montessori Program as a care strategy for persons with dementia. This education session is offered to family and professional caregivers as well as the general public. Dementia 2012 will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at the Betty Cardno Centre in Clinton. A light supper will be provided. Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the door. “Dr. Rylett is an interesting and passionate researcher who has been involved with Alzheimer Society initiatives at both a local and provincial level,” says Cathy Ritsema, Executive Director of the Huron County Alzheimer Society. “Marge Dempsey has years of experience in providing and directing dementia care.
