UCW donates $500 to charity
Members of the Belgrave United
Church Women met at the home of
Pat Hunking in Blyth on Tuesday
evening, with Barbara Anderson’s
group in charge of the program.
Mrs. Anderson opened the meeting
with a poem she read from the
Second reader, called September.
Mrs. Hunking led in worship,
with an opening reading and prayer,
and referred to the scripture telling
about the use of salt and its
seasoning. She told stories she had
heard which told us we need to
show our Christianity by our
actions.
Barbara Harper reported on the
profit made from the bazaar that was
held on Sept. 15 and it was agreed
that we would give $500 each to the
FoodGrains Bank, the church and
the UCW. She thanked everyone for
all their help that day. Mrs. Harper
also asked to be relieved of the
treasurer’s position in the new year,
so we would appreciate anyone who
could take over those
responsibilities.
Muriel Coultes showed the DVD
of the 50th UCW Anniversary
Celebrations that were held in
Ancaster in July, and Nancy Jardin
displayed several angel figurines
and spoke of her personal belief in
Angels and played the music, “I
believe there are angels among us”.
Angels are messengers of God – and
almost everyone has had that “Ah
ha” moment when something has
happened and there is no reason for
it.
The next meeting will be at the
home of Donna Shaw on Tuesday,
Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. Everyone is
welcome. Following the benediction
and grace, Barbara Harper and
Freda Scott served lunch and a
social time followed.

For their sixth meeting, Fashions
by Wawanosh 4-H club met at the
Auburn Hall on Aug. 27. The
members spread out and began to
work on their ongoing projects. If
members were done, they did their
samples.
They took a break to do roll call
which asked members to show one
of their samples and where it would
be on a garment. Members showed
their darts, notching, clipping,
finished seams, hems or fasteners
and explained the purpose.
Then Cathy Drennan handed out a
sewing quiz and members worked in
pairs to answer the questions. It was
a nice review of everything the
members learned. Members broke
off again to sew. The projects
included many pajama shorts, a
pillow case, a pencil case, a dress, a
gym bag, an apron and a laptop
case.
All of these projects provided
members with practise sewing and
will be used by the members. The
meeting ended with a snack and the
4-H motto.
For achievement, the club went to
Julie Redmond’s home on Aug. 29.
She owns her own business and
makes draperies and does alterations
for clients.
She showed the members her
workshop in the basement. She
demonstrated how to make a
spaghetti strap and how to make a
pillow case with piping. She told the
members a few tricks to do when
sewing. The members got watch her
use a serger and a needle felting
machine. Then Julie offered some of
her old material sample
books to take home for future
projects.
President Reba Jefferson thanked
Julie for sharing her knowledge with
the club. Perhaps she even inspired
a career in sewing for some
members.
Books were due on Sept. 13 with
one project for junior members and
two sewing projects for senior
members. Members would like to
thank the leaders for all of their
patience and advice, as they could
not have completed their projects
without them.

Amanda Aitken, right, and mother Glenyce Snell,
representing The Old Mill south of Blyth, were on hand last
Tuesday to unveil an electrical car charger being operated
as part of Sun Country Highway’s ambitious goal of having
a nationwide highway of chargers for electric car owners.
The charger reportedly works with all models of electrical
cars, however some, like the Tesla Roadster Aitken is
charging above, require a special adapter to be operated.
