The Wingham Ironmen recorded a
pair of victories over the weekend to
improve to 5-3-0-0 in the Western
Junior C Hockey League.
The Ironmen offence erupted for
five goals in the third period on
Friday evening at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex as
they romped to an 8-1 decision over
the Goderich Sailors. On Saturday
evening at the Mount Forest District
Community Centre, the Ironmen
took a 2-0 first period lead and
stretched it into a 9-4 victory over
the Mount Forest Patriots.
Aaron Armstrong paced the attack
on Friday evening, as he scored three
goals, including a pair of
shorthanded markers and added two
assists for a five-point game.
The Ironmen led 2-0 after the first
20 minutes of play and were in front
by a 3-1 margin after two periods.
Andrew Scott had two goals while
single markers were added by Derek
Elliott, Travis Donaldson and Drew
Gross. Dylan Williams picked up
three assists. Single helpers were
received by Josh Stewart, Drew
Shantz, Gross, Donaldson, Blair
Goss and Evan Ducharme. Chace
Duckworth was the lone goalgetter
for Goderich.
Wingham outshot the Sailors 43-
25 and were 2-11 on the power play.
Ironmen coach Russ Sutton said
the team started a little slow but once
they got their feet going and the
puck moving again the game was not
too bad.
The Ironmen ran into penalty
problems in the first period, but
fortunately it did not cost them.
“We started to take some selfish
penalties,” he said. “We addressed
that issue in the room after the first
period and our penalty killing cameup strong tonight. They shut downwhen they had too.”
It took the Ironmen a while to get
going because Goderich employed a
neutral zone trap and Ironmen were
trying to carry the puck a little too
long. “Once we started skating
with the puck and moving it, things
went along a lot better,” said Sutton.
It took Armstrong over a period to
get going, but once he did he scored
a hattrick. “He’s a tough player to
stop and when he starts clicking it’s
nice to watch, that’s for sure,” the
coach said.
Evan Ducharme was wearing
sweater number 22, instead of the
usual 24, and the sweater had an ‘A’
on it. “It was a surprise,” he
said. “They lost my jersey so I put on
another jersey and it had the ‘A’ on it,
so I was an assistant captain
tonight.”
Ducharme said the game went
really well. “We started really slow,”
he said. “It’s kind of tough to play
Goderich, we got to get up for the
game and make sure we’re prepared,
but overall it went well and we got
the two points.”
Donaldson led the offence on
Saturday evening in Mount Forest as
he collected two goals and three
assists. Armstrong chipped in with a
goal and three helpers. Williams and
Joey Terwoord had a goal and an
assist each, with single markers
tallied by Justin Jacklin, Elliottt,
Gross and Goss. Brett Brophy
earned three assists and single
helpers were received by Ducharme
and Darren Kerr.
The Ironmen have three games
this weekend. They host the Mitchell
Hawks on Friday at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex

that up with a 9-4 Victory over the Mount Forest Patriots. The team has a trying weekend
ahead of them taking on the Mitchell Hawks on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Wingham travelling to

Local students perform well at cross country event
Exeter hosted nearly 1,600
students for the annual Avon
Maitland District School Board
cross county meet on Oct. 11.
This was the first year the race was
held in Exeter. For the last two years,
the district meet has been held at
Benmiller Conservation Area. In an
attempt to help cut the amount of
travelling and the sheer cost of that
travel, each region is taking a turn
hosting a district event.
South Huron trustee and vice chair
Randy Wagler said Morrison Dam in
Exeter is a great venue for the race.
“It is a lovely area,” said Wagler,
“This time of year it is just
gorgeous.” “It will be a great event
and one I am sure many of them
won’t forget,” he told his fellow
trustees at their Oct. 9 meeting.
Students from all 39 elementary
schools in age categories 8 to 13
participated.
Hullett Central Public School
student Abby Bos finished second in
the eight-year-old girls race while
Maitland River Elementary School
student Alycia Coultes placed fifth.

placed second, Maitland’s

Special to The Citizen
Michael Cowan of Wingham pled
guilty to causing a disturbance and
was handed 12 months of probation
in Wingham court on Oct. 11.
In addition to the charge of causing
a disturbance, Judge R.G.E. Hunter
found Cowan guilty of failing to
comply with the terms of a probation
order made in London recently.
Crown Attorney Perry Hill said
that on July 16 Cowan was in line at
Foodland in Wingham around 2:45
p.m. when he began checking out
with one of the clerks. When a
package of corn was scanned at
$3.99, Cowan disputed the cost of
the corn, saying it was posted at
significantly less.
The clerk called the manager to
the cash register where Cowan
began yelling and screaming
obscenities, Hill said.
Hill said there were many people
around to witness the incident,
including families and small
children, but that did not deter
Cowan from yelling and swearing.
The scene continued outside of the
store, Hill said, as Cowan continued
his tirade in the store’s parking lot
before entering a vehicle and exiting
the parking lot.
Hill said Cowan had an
“extensive” criminal record that was
admitted into evidence.
Hill, acting on behalf of Crown
Attorney Teresa Donnelly, said that
a joint submission for a $250 fine
and a 12-month term of probation
was being sought by both parties.
Cowan, however, through duty
counsel Lynn Johnson, submitted his
financial records into evidence,
requesting a lower fine, a request
Hunter was not receptive to.
“You’re lucky I’m not upping the
fine considering the performance,”
Hunter told Cowan.
Cowan was ordered to pay the
$250 within six months and was
given 12 months probation, during
which he is ordered to be in good
behaviour, keep the peace and not
set foot in Foodland.
