ANYONE INTERESTED IN PLAYING Men's Town League Hockey 19 and over Contact: Jeff ~ 519-887-9790 Mike ~ 519-887-6449 Warm-up skate on October 11 at 9:00 pm Sports Sebastian named to Canadian Under 21 fastball team Brussels resident Ty Sebastian was named to Canada’s Under 21 National Fastball Team over the summer and the Lambton College student said he was pleasantly surprised by the announcement. “I was very proud to get the opportunity to represent my country,” he said. Having been a member of the Under 19 Wiarton Red Devil squad as well, and being named as the MVP of the squad, Sebastian says he hasn’t seen the level of competition he will be involved in, but said that he is familiar with some of his fellow players during his time on the Under 19 squad. The Red Devils won the 2011 Pepsi U19 Men’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championship. “I’ve played versus almost everyone on the team,” he said, stating that his teammates come from locations as close as Stratford, Owen Sound and New Hamburg as well as from across the country. On Oct. 26 the member of the Brussels Tigers will be heading to Buenos Aires in Argentina for the tournament which will start on Nov. 1 and end on Nov. 10. The tournament starts with a six- game round robin series which will limit the field for later competitions and Sebastian said his team will be taking on the host country of Argentina as well as Japan, Mexico, the British Virgin Islands and two other teams during their bid for the trophy. Sebastian said that getting to this point in his baseball career has had a lot to do with everyone who helped him with the sport from his time in Brussels Minor Baseball right through to his time with the Brussels Tigers. Sebastian, who is now studying Sports Recreation Management at Lambton College, graduated from F.E. Madill Secondary School. Some of those that have helped along the way, including Doug McArter, are hosting a fundraiser to help him with his trip at the Brussels Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on Friday, Oct. 19, right before he leaves. McArter said that the goal of the fundraiser, which is a wing and pub night that will feature food, raffles and a 50/50 draw, was to help him with any travel expenses. “We didn’t know how to do it, but we wanted to get together and support him,” McArter said of the community. “We want him to know that the community wants to help him out so we’re hoping they will come out.” The Legion is donating the facility for the event while the Brussels Optimists are helping with manpower according to McArter, so the funds raised will go directly to helping Sebastian get to the tournament. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Midget AA Lightning shut out Wildcats in weekend action The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA Lightning made the long trip to Windsor worthwhile with a 2-0 win over the Wildcats on Saturday. The Bolts were again short on the front end and called upon defencemen Sarah Biesenthal and Kailyn Soers to play up and bolster the forward ranks. The Lightning again carried the play with some persistent forechecking and solid defensive zone play. Courtney Surridge opened the scoring following some cycling behind the net between linemates Ashlee Lawrence and Harley Westman. The second Lighting goal was less pretty, with Kelly Gribbons stuffing home a shorthanded rebound off the stick of Cassidy Colhoun. The goal was at the end of along shift where Windsor was unable to get the puck out of their zone against the pesky Gribbons and Colhoun despite being a man up. Goaltender Shea Tiley turned aside all Wildcat shots to earn the shutout. Next weekend the Lightning are looking forward to their second tournament of the year in Etobicoke.
