A tree worth $100
The Brussels Horticultural Society’s annual budget got a
$100 bump when they were named the winners of the
Communitree contest for their entry, shown above. (Photo

The good thing about the nasty
days of fall is that it gives an
opportunity to ponder life. Emotions
that we often set aside are offered
time to be considered and hopefully
dealt with. Life has its own schedule
and we are just the recipient. So on
this chilly, wet October day, it’s a
good one to clear the mind by just
thinking.
John Pennington is on my mind.
He died suddenly on Saturday.
Death is one of those events that
stops us in mid-step as we consider
how our lives intersected. John was
one of the Brussels guys who
invaded my life in the 1960s. Carl,
Don, Jerry and John all liked cars
and girls in equal amounts and so
Sue, Bonnie, Beth and others were
part of a fun time for me. Later the
firefighter John and that crew were
good for many laughs over the years
as first aid training became more
involved for the volunteer
firefighters. Being a small business
owner, John was just the right guy to
have around when heating, mostly
not, was an issue. You could count
on John to try and embarrass you ashe could recall stories that would geteveryone smiling. So John, thanks
for the memories and we’ll share
some of them with Bonnie, Mark
and Lisa. It’s been good to know
you.
Alma Watson has returned from
time in Nova Scotia and Cape
Breton. Son John celebrated
retirement time as he did tour guide
duty as they visited Andrew in
Halifax, Mike and Val’s son,
Matthew in Antigonish, John and
Wendy’s son and Archie McDonald
in Wreck Cove. So lots of visiting
was done in all the places. All is
well in the east as far as these folks
are concerned and of course they
gave great-grandma a proper tour of
the region. So hello from the fellas
in the east.
It’s good to know that the
Communitree folks knew a good
thing when they saw it. Our
Horticulture Society is $100 richer
because of your votes and the efforts
of the laddermen at the tree. the
picture of our tree showed great
details all the way to the top, so it’s
good to know that at least two men
on ladders take instruction well.
Congratulations to all who prepared
and decorated the beautiful tree. I
hear some of the decorations are
being auctioned at an upcoming
Horticulture meeting. Talk to the
members if you need them in your
life.
We’re into cold season already, so
cough into your sleeve and wash
your hands as you sing a 20-secondsong as you lather and do it as oftenas you can.
Don’t forget the Witches Walk at
the Greenway Trail in Blyth on
Saturday night – the spooks are
waiting.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

It was a busy weekend at the
Brussels Legion Branch. The Friday
night suppers started with a good
crowd enjoying roast beef. Thanks
to helpers Mary Bradshaw, Deb
Caan, Cec Moore and Mabel
Glanville. Desserts were provided
by Helen Dobson. This week is ham
and scalloped potatoes.
The fish fry on Saturday was well
attended with over 140 enjoying the
dinner. The outside helpers had to
endure the cooler, wet weather and
we appreciate the efforts of Barrie
Currie, Murray Lowe, Greg Wilson,
Jim and Chris Brown and Sharon
Robbins. The inside workers
included Deb Caan, Mabel
Glanville, Sandra Josling and Mary
Bradshaw.
Comrades Jo-Ann and Rick
McDonald, Eric and Deb Ross and
John Lowe attended the District
Convention in Tobermory.
Comrades Eric and John attended
meetings for the District Council
and Comrade Jo-Ann attended the
presidents’ meeting. They all
attended the seminar and banquet,
where past-president of Dominion
Command, Comrade Jack Frost
conducted a seminar on protocol and
was the guest speaker at the banquet.
Comrade Jack was formerly of Port
Elgin and District C and is a well
respected and liked member of the
Royal Canadian Legion.

Grace feels Huron is
falling behind in
economic development
Following up on his comments at
the Oct. 3 meeting of Huron County
Council, Goderich’s John Grace
revisited the issue of economic
development with council at the
Oct. 10 Committee of the Whole
meeting.
Grace said he was concerned that
Huron County was being left behind
in the world of economic
development and the trends in the
county, he says, support his
argument.
Grace said that over 10 per cent of
the county is using local food banks,
which is up substantially from past
years. He also outlined the
thousands of jobs the area has lost in
the manufacturing and service
industry sectors.
Grace said he took issue with the
budget of the economic
development department, spending
$35,000 a year for development and
marketing of a community of over
60,000 people.
“I spend more than that on my
business and we’re a community of
65,000,” Grace told councillors. “I
don’t think it’s enough.”
Grace said there is a shift ongoing
right now in economic
