(Jim Brown photo) The Wingham Ironmen gained some revenge against the Mitchell Hawks on Friday evening in Western Junior C Hockey League action at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. After losing 4-1 to the Hawks on Sept. 29 in Mitchell, the Ironmen scored an 8-4 decision over the Hawks on Friday evening. The Ironmen held a 6-1 advantage after the opening 20 minutes and took an 8-2 lead into the third period. Aaron Armstrong led the offence as he collected two goals and three assists. Drew Gross had two goals and a pair of assists. Also scoring for the Ironmen were Evan Ducharme, Travis Donaldson, Brett Brophy and Derek Elliott. Donaldson and Darren Kerr had two assists each. Jalen Aitcheson had two goals for the Hawks. Ironmen coach Russ Sutton of Lucknow said the team played well. “Actually the guys did play well tonight,” he said. “We came to play and at the drop of the puck we started off well.” According to Sutton, the Ironmen have more room on the ice surface in Wingham than there is in Mitchell. “We were skating and moving the puck tonight,” he said. “Last weekend we tried to stickhandle in the small arena and they bumped us off the puck.” “We moved it tonight and took it to them tonight,” he said. The coach said a win like the one over Mitchell is good in that it gets the spirit back up. The players were getting down after two consecutive losses and were putting too much pressure on themselves. “This was a big win all around, for the team, the players and to keep them positive,” he said. Assistant captain Travis Donaldson said everybody played together to produce the good game. “The young guys were stepping up and taking on a bigger role,” he said. He picked up three points in the game and credited linemate Aaron Armstrong with his success. “He’s a great guy to work with,” he said, adding that he can get you the puck every time. He said the win over Mitchell should give the Ironmen some momentum for next weekend. The Ironmen host the Goderich Sailors on Friday evening at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and then travel to Mount Forest on Saturday for an 8 p.m. contest against the Patriots. CH debates to grant for sports tourism strategic plan Central Huron Council deferred a request from the Clinton and Central Huron BIA for nearly $17,000 that may or may not be paid back to the municipality. The concept behind the grant, said BIA chair Jeff Roy, is to begin implementation of the sports tourism strategic plan for the municipality. Roy says he hopes to apply for several grants and if they are approved, the BIA would attempt to pay the municipality back. He said the BIA’s goal is to become self- sufficient, but if none of the grant applications are approved, paying the money back may not be feasible. Councillors were supportive, however, with Mayor Jim Ginn saying he would be prepared to authorize the withdrawal even if it was a grant that wasn’t intended to be repaid. “I think we should support this right now,” Ginn said. Councillor Alison Lobb, however, while supportive, said she would like an opportunity to review the grant application before council approved the funds outright. The request, however, was eventually deferred and will be dealt with at council’s strategic planning meeting that is scheduled for Sept. 24. The money, specifically $16,875, would go towards retaining Central Huron Community Improvement Co-ordinator Genny Smith. The financial support would run between January and April of 2013 and would be accompanied by the BIA’s contribution of $5,625 during those months. Roy said the application had been prepared earlier this year, but that the BIA had been “led astray” in its first attempt at the application and it was eventually pulled. Smith said that the grants that were available, if the BIA was successful, could certainly pay off for the organization. Roy said the BIA has the support of Huron County as well as several other organizations because no one else in the county is aiming their tourism sights on sports tourism. Midget AA Lightning tie season opener against Sarnia Sting The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA Lightning ground out a tie with visiting Sarnia Sting in their first regular season game of the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League. The Bolts controlled the play for the first two periods and took advantage of a Sting second-period penalty to go up 1-0. Ciara Lark’s point shot was blocked by a Sarnia defender, but the rebound landed back on her stick. Lark wasted little time, stepping into the slot and firing the puck into the top corner of the Sting net. Miranda Lantz was credited with the only assist. Despite ringing a couple of shots off the goal post and some missed opportunities, the Lightning could not increase their one-goal advantage. Following the second period flood, the Lightning seemed to be thinking ahead to Thanksgiving turkey and allowed the sting to get back into the game. Goaltender Morgan Baker held the meshed fort most of the period, but the Sting managed to jam one in late in the period on a goal-mouth scramble. Final score was 1-1. Next weekend the Lightning make the trek to Windsor for a match-up with the Wildcats.
