meeting.
“People are calling and asking tobe added every pick-up day,” Michiesaid.Councillor David Baker agreed. “I
do believe I see more every
week,” he said. “I see a lot
more wheelie bins than I saw blue
boxes.”
A report from Michie said that in
the urban areas, 462 of the small
bins were now being used for wastedisposal as well as 48 of the mediumbins and 10 of the largest size. In rural areas, the numbers are 66
small bins, 160 medium and 17
large.
In recycling, 147 medium bins are
being used in urban areas as well as
391 large bins. In rural areas there
are 156 of the medium bins and 543
large bins.With a charge only on the binsused for waste, the bins arerecovering nearly $97,000 to help
offset waste removal and recycling
costs.
Michie said that Bluewater
Recycling Association had provided
an explanation for complaints that
they were not picking up from both
sides of some roads in some area.Where there are only a couple ofhomes on one side of the roaddrivers will sometimes move the
bins to the other side of the
road to save making an extra
trip. After they empty the bin
they are supposed to put the bins
back where the homeowner left
them.
“How do we stop it?” was Deputy-
Mayor Jason Breckenridge’s
response when the latest plan for a
mandatory septic tank reinspection
was considered by Morris-
Turnberry Council at its Sept. 18
meeting.
Mayor Paul Gowing said he had
voted against the proposal at Huron
County Council but it had passed
anyway.
The proposal would add $31 a
year to the taxes of each homeowner
with a septic tank to cover an
inspection of the tank every five
years. The money will be collected
by the municipality and forwarded
to the county. Gowing said his
opposition is because he doesn’t
think the inspection will provide
useful results.
Gowing noted that residents of
urban municipalities will not
be charged this re-inspection
fee because they are on sewer
service.
“Some municipalities see this as
progressive legislation,” he said.
“Goderich is a big supporter.”
The plan needs a triple majority
before it can be implemented: a
majority of county councillors
plus a majority of the municipalities
representing a majority of the
county’s population.
Council voted to develop a
resolution expressing its opposition
to the proposal, which will return to
Huron County Council.
