The Citizen, 2012-10-04, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2012.By Pastor Mark Royall Huron Chapel Evangelical Missionary Church, Auburn I love watching how God works. Especially if I am in the mix of those workings. Years ago a couple of fellow pastors and I went to Red Bay for a few days to stay at a cottage that was made available for us to use. Red Bay is a little summer community that sits on Lake Huron up on the Bruce Peninsula. In the summer the place is buzzing with families in RV parks, lodges and cottages but in early October it was, as the saying goes,’dead as a doornail’. We saw no one. I did not see a single car driving down the street or single light shining in a cottage. It was if someone had put the little hamlet to sleep and it wasn’t to be wakened again until the next summer. During our time in Red Bay the three of us talked together, prayed together and went for walks along the quiet streets. On one of our morning walks we noticed a trailer/RV park with a restaurant that had an “open” sign in the window. We thought this was odd that this place or any place for that matter, would be open during the off season. We thought maybe they had forgot to take the sign down at summer’s end. We decided to go and check it out. We went up to the door and were pleasantly surprised to discover it was unlocked. So we walked in hoping we might be able to get some breakfast. A middle-aged lady popped her head out from the back kitchen. By the look on her face I think she was more surprised than we were when we walked in. Of course no one else was in the restaurant. We found a booth, sat down and waited. After a few moments the lady we saw sticking her head out from the kitchen came to our table with some menus. She seemed nervous and then began apologizing as we looked over the menu saying it was her husband who usually does the cooking and he went into town for some supplies. Neither of them ever thought someone would actually come in during his absence. I could tell she was overwhelmed with the idea of cooking breakfasts for us so I spoke up and said, “I will tell you what. Why don’t me and my friends go back in the kitchen and help you cook our breakfasts?” She agreed and so back we went. In no time at all we were cracking eggs, frying bacon and making toast. All the while we were doing this we were chatting and laughing together. The three pastors quickly became three chefs. We were having so much fun. At one point our host’s curiosity was getting the best of her and she asked me, “What do you guys do for a living anyways?” I answered, “We have the best job in the world! Can you guess what that might be?” She paused, and slowly said the words, “Are you pastors?” “Why yes we are. You guessed right.” She was so excited. She cried and then she laughed. Now I was curious. Why was she responding this way? This is the story she told us. She and her husband had recently moved from a large community close to the city to buy and manage this RV/Trailer park with a restaurant in Red Bay. It was a big change for them. She was a Christian who had a good church family back home in the city. However here being so new she often felt isolated and alone. These feelings had escalated when she recently discovered she had cancer. All these changes were proving to be a lot for her to bear. On this particular morning she was feeling quite low. With her husband away for a good part of the day, with no other people or church family close by she prayed to God, “Lord, I am feeling so alone today. I am afraid of this cancer and all these changes and I don’t want to be alone. I know I live in a place where people are just not around this time of year but could You please send someone to me today? Thank you Lord, Amen.” This was when we walked in. She popped her head out and saw these three gentlemen coming into the restaurant. Already feeling overwhelmed by her situation she was worried at the idea of cooking breakfasts. Her husband did this... not her. But then I offered to go back and cook our breakfasts. She noticed we didn’t complain and how much fun we were having in the kitchen. This is when she asked, “What do you guys do for a living?” She was quietly wondering if God was answering her prayer? You can imagine how she felt when she discovered we were pastors. She had thought there was no chance of someone coming to be with her that day while she was feeling so low. But in this little community during the off season when there was no one else around, God sent her three pastors to minister to her that morning. The three of us gathered around and prayed for her. We talked and visited with her all that morning. When we left she was feeling upbeat and so grateful how God did what she thought was impossible. I would have liked to have been there when her husband came home and asked her, “So how was your day?” She would have quite a story to tell him how in the middle of nowhere God sent her three pastors to minister to her that day. I remember when I was in Grade 2 in my public school and how many mornings we would sing the song, “God sees the little sparrow fall, It meets His tender view; If God so loves the little birds, I know He loves me, too. He loves me, too, He loves me, too, I know He loves me too; THE CATHOLIC PARISHES OF NORTH HURON AND NORTH PERTH CORDIALLY INVITE YOU TO ATTEND HOLY MASS.
