Wingham resident Stephanie Currie was recently named the new program co-ordinator at the Emergency Services Training Centre (ESTC) in Blyth. Currie, who has worked as a business consultant and marketing and advertising specialist in Wingham, Goderich, Stratford and other locations, came to the position as she has come to others: feeling she could make a difference. The role calls for her to help further the name of the school by both broadcasting existing training opportunities there but also by finding more groups to partner with and create more training chances through them. She said that, living in Wingham, she was excited to have the opportunity to be able to help out her local area. “It’s exciting to work in my own backyard,” she said. “I’m lookingforward to helping to develop thearea.” Working for emergency services personnel is also a great opportunity she said as any help she could provide them would make not only their lives and their family lives easier, but everyone in the community would also benefit. “I knew when this opportunity presented itself it was one I would want to take part in,” she said. “To help further develop an organization that trains people in emergency services is helping them to service people every day and it’s a goal I’m invested in.” Currie, a mother of two young boys, spends a lot of time in the community due to hockey, baseball and other activities and is looking forward to furthering her community connections through her job. She said that, while family is a paramount priority, she also puts a high priority on her job, describing herself as driven. “I’m very goal-oriented,” she said. “I know what I need to do and what I can do and I go for it. When I feel I can’t do anything else in a position, I’ll search for something else to work on. I think that, with this role, I’ve found something I can really help build over time. “I was very fortunate to find a role that was almost tailor-made for my résumé,” she said. “I may not have the emergency services background, but I’m learning that with fresh eyes and it’s giving me the opportunity to help grow the centre.” Her primary goal is to create a strong presence for the centre which will lead to the vision that deceasedFire Department of North HuronFire Chief John Black had for the ESTC when recent years major renovations were completed. “The idea is to make the centre a business so it can take care of itself financially and become self- sustaining,” she said. “We’re doing things like working with St. John Ambulance in Huron County to bring their training here and partnering with other groups to not only succeed in marketing the centre but also to allow community members to capitalize those kind of partnerships in their own backyard. We can bring training for people into the area.” She said that, aside from broadcasting the centre’s presence as a training location, she also wants to help the community become more involved and she wants to let them know that they can get access to the facilities at the ESTC. “We very much want to open the ESTC to the community for events,” she said. “People can rent classroom space or look at other uses, all they have to do is get in touch with me.” Currie is also involved in the annual Musical Muskrat Festival in Wingham, having acted as the marketing co-ordinator for this year’s celebration and works with the Wingham Ironmen to help their organization succeed.
