UCW donates $5,600 locally
Members of the Londesborough
UCW gathered in the Sunday school
room on Monday, Sept. 17 for their
first meeting of the fall. The
program was conducted by Helen
Lobb, Marjorie Duizer and Brenda
Radford.
That evening the ladies were
introduced to Irish Folding, a new
craft to most of them. They spent
some time making Christmas cards
that will be sent to the shut-ins of the
congregation.
Treasurer Lena Nesbitt reportedthat the UCW has a healthy bankbalance. At the recent executive
meeting it was recommended that
the women make donations to
Clinton Public Hospital, Seaforth
General Hospital, Goderich
Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital, the Huron-Perth Resource
Centre, the FoodGrains Bank, Camp
Menesetung and Londesborough
United Church. The donations
amounted to $5,600.
During the business part of the
evening it was decided to make pies
for sale during the first week of
November. A supply of frozen
dinners will also be worked on
through the upcoming caterings for
donation to university students of
the congregation and shut-ins.
This year it has been decided to
purchase just one copy of
Mandate magazine to be left
in the UCW section of the churchlibrary.
A former United Church minister
who spent several years in Clinton
was found not guilty of sexually
assaulting two boys while at a
sleepover in the 1990s.
David Woodall, 56, of Huntsville,
was a minister at Ontario Street
United Church in Clinton between
1991 and 1993 when incident was
alleged to have occurred.
As reported by The London Free
Press, the decision was made in
Goderich on Friday after the jury
deliberated for the majority of the
day. Closing arguments were made
the day before.
Over the span of his career,
Woodall also spent time with the
Hyde Park United Church and St.
David’s United Church, both in
Woodstock. He also served as the
executive secretary of the United
Church of Canada in London.
The two alleged victims, now 31
and 32 years old, claimed that
during the Clinton church’s annual
sleepover Woodall, put his hand
down their sleeping bags and
clothes, touching them
inappropriately.
At the trial, which began on
Monday, Sept. 17, Woodall insisted
that he never touched either of the
boys and couldn’t remember them
from any of the church’s sleepovers.
The 31-year-old man approached
Woodall in 2008 and demanded
money from Woodall in exchange
for his silence. Woodall handed over
a total of $26,000, including a
$5,000 loan.
However, when the man returned
to Woodall later that year asking for
more money, Woodall decided to tell
the police, and his family, charging
the man with extortion, a charge that
was later withdrawn by the crown.
During the trial, Woodall testified
that he gave the man money in order
to keep the “false allegations” out of
the public.
Since the verdict was reached,
both men have launched civil suits
against Woodall and the church.
