Brussels received another facelift
last week. The north windows of the
Brussels Foodland are now
decorated with murals of pictures of
Brussels past and present. Two of the
windows display 47 pictures of
historic Brussels. They include
pictures of former and current
churches, businesses such as the
Queen’s Hotel and Cousins
Creamery. Historic homes such as
the Leckie home and sites like the
Brussels Dam and Mill. The third
window has the history of the village
of Ainlayville and then Brussels.
Economic Development Officer Jan
Hawley for Huron East has done a
marvelous job of improving the
looks of our downtown and helping
to revitalize our downtown core.
Stop by and check out the new
window display in the Foodland
windows.
Helping in the revitalized efforts
of main street Brussels is the new
Huron Country Hardware Store
which held its grand opening on
Saturday. The former Oldfield
Hardware was sold to Mike and
Michelle Dauphin and Andy and
Sarah Overholt in May. They spent
time cleaning out the store during
the early summer and painted the
exterior and had the new Huron
Country Hardware sign erected.
They started in earnest in August to
renovate inside the store. The
hardwood floor was stripped and
refinished and looks absolutely
great. New linoleum was laid in the
former electronic and giftware
section and looks very nice. Walls
were painted and new shelving
installed, a new Sears area is
welcoming and very pleasing to the
eye.
The grand opening had a steady
flow of folks coming to check out
the “fresh” start of the newest
business in town.
A barbecue by Belgrave/Brussels
4H was very well attended and
kudos to those working outside at
the barbecues during the less-than-
pleasant weather. Brussels main
street was lined up for the entire
morning as hundreds of folks
dropped by. Congratulations to
Mike, Michelle, Andy and Sarah on
investing in their future and the
future of Brussels.
The Village of Brussels and all
who patronize the Brussels Library
said farewell to dedicated librarian
Susan Nichol last week. Susan has
retired from the employ of the Huron
County Library after 31 years of
service to the Library of Brussels.
Susan began in the library in 1981,
after librarian Della Nichol became
ill. She lived on the sixth of Morris
with husband Hugh and family and
then moved into the village of
Brussels. They raised a family of
four boys, Stefan, Terry, Cody and
Josh. They moved to Kincardine
after the last boy had finished
secondary school, but Susan
continued to commute to her duties
at the Brussels Library. She has seen
many changes during her years at the
library from the old time library
card, to the use of computer
technology. The introduction of
computers and instruction classes to
the resources of libraries helped to
encourage people to use the library
more. Susan’s trips to Brussels for
work also gave her the opportunity
to visit with her parents, Bill and
Marjory Humphries of Walton,
before or after her shifts. Susan has
made many friends from her time in
Brussels and I am sure many of the
regular patrons of the library will
miss her smiling face. Good luck
with your future endeavours Susan.
The bouts of good and bad
weather over the past week had
some crops coming off and then rest
breaks for awhile. More whites, soys
and high moisture corn and silage
did make it to market or farm storage
before the rain on the weekend.
There was even some hail at lunch
time on Saturday for a little while.
Fall hit officially on Saturday, but
the cool, wet, windy weather had
already gave everyone the hint “it
was fall”.
Our condolences to the Willis
family on the passing of Mabel
Willis. She will be sadly missed by
her children Sharon, Wayne, Dianne
and Donna and their families. She
was a lovely lady who will be
remembered for her dedication to
her family, job and the Ladies
Auxiliary of the Legion. She was a
hard worker and always
conscientious and very obliging to
people she encountered. A fixture at
McCutcheon Motors for over 35
years, when she retired, I recall hersaying, “what will I do now to keep
busy?” Mabel found plenty to do by
continuing to become involved in the
auxiliary and with her ever-
expanding family of grandchildren
and then great-grandchildren. She
would be seen daily for many years
walking her constant companion,
Tess, her adorable dog. Our
sympathies to family and the
extended family and friends.
Lorne and Bonnie Glanville are
now settled into their new home on
North Line and had a party to
celebrate. They invited their many
members of family and friends to
look at the house and to enjoy a
wonderful dinner provided mostly
by the Glanvilles. There were nearly
50 enjoy the Sunday afternoon get-
together.
Congratulations to Adam and
Kaye Smith on welcoming their
newest grandchild. Their son Dave
and wife Patricia welcomed Joseph
to their family last week. He joins
siblings Nathaniel, Hannah and
Sarah.
Matt Snyder underwent shoulder
surgery a couple of weeks ago. He is
coming along well and will be doing
physiotherapy to help with his
recovery. Good luck to Matt.
Bert Bachert is a patient in
Seaforth Hospital and is coming
along. He suffered a fall and has
been recovering for about a month.
Our hopes for continuedimprovement. Margery Huether
remains in Seaforth Hospital at this
time.
Neil McDonald has been home
from Vancouver for 10 days. He is
working on his new home in
Bayfield and checking in with
family. He helped for a couple of
days with the soybean harvest and
planting of the winter wheat. Now
that Neil is retired from dentistry,
we hope to see him home more
often.
Leona Armstrong has returned
from a five-day trip with her sisters.
Leona was joined by Helen
MacLean, Doris McKinley and Joan
Campbell for an excursion to
Michigan and the Blenheim area.
They were kept busy visiting
relatives in these areas. The Johnston
sisters have been getting together for
a holiday with each other for 10
years. They have been on bus trips,
cruises, sunny island resorts and
various places in Ontario. They had
a great time experiencing new
things, places and remembering the
good old days as girls on the
eighth of Morris. What a wonderful
commitment they have made to keep
their sister relationship close.
We are sorry to hear Carmen Riley
has suffered some health issues. He
has been in hospital but has been
released. Betty Riley has taken leave
from the Walton Inn to be at home to
nurse him back to health. We willmiss the pair of them at the
restaurant and hope to see them there
soon.
The Walton community is
saddened to learn of the passing of
Elliott Hackwell on the weekend.
Elliott had been a patient in Seaforth
and Stratford hospitals for about
three weeks. He was the oldest of the
Hackwell boys and was in his 84th
year. He was born and lived on the
Hackwell home farm for all his 84
years. He was a bachelor farmer and
will be sadly missed by his brothers
Howard and Merton and their
families.
Walton Raceway held its final
event of the year at the track. The
Saturday program was practice but
many rolled in early for the next
day’s race. They had regular racing
and ATV racing on Sunday.
Duff’s United Church is in the
regular mode of activities and the
last Sunday of the month is social
Sunday. Coffee and cookies will be
served after church and everyone is
welcome to stay and enjoy a time of
fellowship with members of the
community and church family.

Huron East Economic Development Officer Jan Hawley is
seen here pointing to one of the two recently-developed
heritage walking trails in Brussels. The maps, along with
lists and pictures of the trails’ attractions, are now posted
outside of Brussels Foodland for all to see in yet another
one of Hawley’s projects to revitalize downtown Brussels.
