Vodden, a member of North Huron Council and a local historian, remembers a time when the bakery was a different bakery; one owned and operated by his father. “It’s amazing being in here and seeing the shop,” he said adding that the brickwork, which was exposed during renovations, was something he had never seen. “Looking in it looks like a totally new building, it’s changed a lot,” he said. Primarily, he said that the entrance to the building used to be in the centre of the storefront, not the side, and the location of staircases, baking equipment, display cases and walls had changed drastically. In his father’s time as a baker, the storefront was dominated by a lot of empty space because much of the work was done in the basement. While the current Queens Bakery is an espresso bar and features baked sweets and treats, Vodden’s father ran a traditional bakery. In the basement there was a bread mixer and proofer to create the dough and rise the bread in and there was also a300-loaf oven on-site. Vodden explained that, between when the first bakery his family opened in 1930 in the north half of what is now Sharon’s Miniatures and eventually closed in 1946, it changed a lot. Started originally by his father Harold and uncle Lloyd, the store was sold to a local business-man Albert Walsh whose son was to run the business. A year later, the business was sold to Brock’s parents on a personal note by Walsh. His son had not been able to run the business as he had hoped according to Brock. The business grew so quickly that Brock’s parents were able to quickly pay back the note and, in 1940, just a few short years later, expanded into a larger site. Part of that success was, according to Brock, due to his father being a good Samaritan. “Near the time we moved, we had business in London one night,” he said. “I remember coming home and passing the Radar School near Clinton. An airman was walking to Clinton and we picked him up.” Brock explained that the airman turned out to be in charge of food services for the base and that the contract for supplying bread was up. After being dropped off, the man brought the forms that allowed Harold to apply for the contract tohis car and encouraged him to apply. Adding that contract, which he did get, with the contract to supply bread to the Huron County Home which would later become the site of Huronview, the bakery’s business increased substantially. Eventually both parts of Sharon’s Miniatures became the home of Harold’s bakery and then, on doctor’s orders, he switched to selling and servicing televisions and radios. Brock said that he’s glad to see the bakery and feels that their current sales model is one that follows a revelation his father had before the bakery was closed. “Dad’s view was that keeping a small bakery was impossible,” he said. “Big bakeries used gimmicks to load up local stores and try and get customers.” Brock said that the people who bought his father’s bakery, as well as all his recipes and contracts – the owners of Bartliff’s Bakery in Clinton – reflect that paradigm shift as well. By Denny Scott The Citizen Entertainment for young and old Kathleen Cook, daughter of Les and Jackie Cook, two of the four owners of the Queens Bakery in Blyth, played some tunes for the bakery’s patrons last week including Sienna Lentzteuwen.
