Duff’s UCW hosted Sept. HP UCW executive meeting
It has been another good week on
the land for the farming community
and farmers are another step closer
to a successful fall. White beans are
getting fewer, but there are still lotsof soybeans to harvest. The rain lastweek gave everyone a little break butthere is still lots of work ahead.Unfortunately, the weather forecast
for this week indicated a lot of
rain.
Congratulations to Chris and Erin
Blake on the arrival of their twin
boys. The two handsome boys
arrived last week and are doing very
well. Foster and Mason will be in
hospital for a few days before
coming home to St. Michaels
Road. Waiting to lend a helping
hand are grandparents Glenn and
Marilyn Beuerman and Clara Blake. Congratulations to Chris andErin. Our feel-better wishes go out toBarry Hoegy who was a patient in
Seaforth and is now home. Elliott
Hackwell is in Seaforth Hospital and
we hope he is improving. Still a
patient at Seaforth Hospital is
Margery Huether but Ian Wilbee has
been released and is home. Mabel
Willis is a patient in Seaforth
Hospital as is Edith Wey. We wish
the best to them all.
The ladies of Duff’s UCW were
the hosts for the Huron Perth UCW
executive meeting on Tuesdayafternoon. They enjoyed a lunchprovided by Duff’s UCW and servedby Karen Hoegy, Helen Craig andMonique Baan.
Sunday service at Duff’s United
had worshippers greeted by Emma
Baan. The congregation sang happy
birthday to Adam Baan who was
celebrating his 16th birthday on
Sunday. Participating in the service
was Phyllis Mitchell who read the
scripture for the day. The collection
was taken by Don Baan and Jo-Ann
McDonald. Rev. Peter’s reflection
was entitled, “The Tongue
Directing”.
Congratulations to Bob
Cunningham who celebrated his
85th birthday last week. A lovely
open house was held in the common
room of Perth Meadows where Boblives. A wonderful crowd enjoyed aquick visit with Bob and thedelicious light lunch provided. Thefamily enjoyed a meal
together following the afternoon’s
activities.
Many will remember Bob from his
years of living in the Ethel area. He
was the transportation manager for
the Huron County Board of
Education for many years and was
an active participant in many of the
popular plays put on at Grey Central
Public School.
He has been a popular choice for
the position of emcee at many
functions and always has a smile on
his face and a pleasant word for all
he meets. Congratulations Bob for
reaching the milestone of 85.

Ladies don costumes for games
The Walton Brewers travelled to
Osheken to participate in the Ontario
Challenge Cup. The tournament
invites the winners in various
leagues across Ontario to
participate. There were 14 teams
participating. The Brewers were the
2011 Huron County Champs. They
played Friday evening against
Sweaburg Crush and lost in a good
game 6-3. They played Saturday
afternoon against the Wyevale Tribe
and had an excellent game that went
into extra innings before giving up
the two runs for the 5-3 loss. The
team said it was a good tournament
with some outstanding teams
participating.
The Brussels Ladies slo-pitch
year-end tournament was held on
Saturday with the Bookies team in
charge of the day. Teams played on
both Brussels diamonds, Walton and
Ethel in the morning. Play continued
on the Brussels diamonds for the rest
of the day. The rain in the morning
made all the diamonds a bit messy,
but most teams played on despite the
rain.
Costumes and dressing up are part
of the day and there were some very
interesting outfits. Teams were
dressed as dominoes, Hawaiian
girls, beer cans, Mennonites, tight
and brights and retro 70s to name a
few.
The Walton Wonders played their
best ball of the year winning three
games in the “A” division until
losing in the final to the “A”
winners, the Twisted Sisters. The
“B” champs for the day were the
Monkton team – Lavern’s Ladies
who defeated the Ethel Diehards and
Cougars in the final. Congrats to all
teams and only eight months until
ball season again. Have a good
winter everyone.
