SportsIronmen trump Mount Forest 7-4 in season-opener
The Wingham Ironmen kicked off
the 2012-13 Western Junior C
Hockey League season on a positive
note.
Scoring four shorthanded goals –
including three by captain Aaron
Armstrong of Teeswater, the
Ironmen posted a 7-3 decision over
the Mount Forest Patriots last Friday
evening at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex.
Drew Gross opened the scoring,
getting a breakaway at 6:20 of the
opening period. Justin Jacklin and
Darren Kerr assisted. Mount Forest
tied the game 16 seconds later as Ian
Bridgewater scored.
Travis Donaldson scored the first
shorthanded goal at 15:48 to give the
Ironmen a 2-1 advantage. Armstrong
assisted on the goal.
At 1:13 of the second period,
Armstrong netted his first
shorthanded marker, assisted by
Evan Ducharme of Brussels. Goals
by Bridgewater and Dean Nixon of
the Patriots tied the game at three.
Jacklin scored at 16:51 to give the
Ironmen a 4-3 edge.
Matt McCracken gave the
Ironmen a two-goal lead at 3:10 of
the third period. Assists on the goal
went to Dylan Williams and Drew
Shantz. Two unassisted shorthanded
goals by Armstrong at 7:34 and
17:42, rounded out the scoring in the
game.
The Ironmen outshot the Patriots
36-32 and were 0-5 on the power
play.
Head coach Russ Sutton of
Lucknow said it was a really good
game to start the season.
“We were a little rusty at the start,
but once we got going the guys
bought into the program and so far
so good,” he said. “We scored some
shorthanded goals which were the
luck of the chance.”
“All in all the guys played well
and we got the win out of it,” he said.
Sutton said he was very surprised
that the penalty kill came up with
four shorthanded goals.
“Usually you worry about keeping
the puck out of the net, but you have
to work hard to get those chances,”
he said.
According to the coach, the key to
the team’s success was that nobody
gave up.
“Even when we got into a lull in
the second period they didn’t stop,
they kept working hard, worked hard
to keep the puck out of our zone,”
said Sutton.
With the five-time defending
league champions Walkerton Hawks
coming in on Friday, the coach said
it will be a big challenge for the
Ironmen.
“We’ve got to keep skating, we’ve
got to work hard, block shots and
make sure we keep our zone clean,”
he said.
Sutton said they are going with
two rookie goalies – Ben Errington
and Brandon Vabderschot – and the
coaching staff is very confident with
the play of the two 17 year olds.
“We have a wide variety of players
from the surrounding area. We are a
local team” he said. “We have a
good nucleus of local talent.”
Armstrong said they brought a lot
of intensity to the game. “The young
guys really played well. It was just a
great team effort,” he said.
According to Armstrong, his
personals game was good. “The
coach put me with some good
players and they really helped me
out, I got some great passes from the
boys and they really did all the
work,” he said.
With regards to his three
shorthanded goals, Armstrong said
Evan Ducharme and Travis
Donaldson were doing all the dirty
work.
The Ironmen host the Walkerton
Hawks on Friday, beginning at 7:30
p.m. at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex and then
travel to Goderich on Saturday for
an 8 pm. game against the Sailors.

Midgets notch exhibition wins
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club enjoyed another busy week. On
Tuesday, Sept. 11 the ladies let the
senior men share their morning for
their senior men’s morning. Hugh
Clugston was the low net for the day
with Brian Carr, second and Harry
George, third. Lloyd Lamont
claimed both longest putt prizes
while Gar Lawrence took home
closest to the pin.
Wednesday the club hosted the
John Malick Memorial senior
tournament. The 60 golfers played
18 holes of golf followed by a steak
barbecue and a good looking prize
table. Harvey Livingston from
Goderich Sunset Golf Club was
overall winner shooting a 77 for the
day. John Dailleboust of Wingham
was the 50-59 low gross winner with
Wayne Pearen from Westmount
winning the over-70 division. The
low net scores were all Wingham
golfers with Dan Campbell in the
50-59, Gerald Coghlin in the 60-69
and Doug Rathwell in the over-70
group. This was a good tournament
in honour of a great past member
who is gone but not forgotten.
The Thursday night men had 40
golfers out for the three club only
night. The use of just three clubs
didn’t stop Trevor Hopf or Jon Lane
as they both came in with 39s. The
closest-to the-pin winner was Jay
Marston with John Nicholson, Rick
Scammell and Doug Reinhardt
taking home longest putt awards.
The hidden score winners were
Lorne Millen and Wayne Gordon.
Saturday the club hosted the
wedding of Irene and John Smith.
The newlyweds shared their vows in
front of the fireplace with 120
friends and family followed by lunch
and their wedding reception in the
dining lounge.
Saturday was also the Grumpy Old
Men golf tournament in memory of
Al Godfrey and Brian Marston. The
40 family and friends enjoyed nine
holes of golf and shared many
laughs and great memories.
On Sunday, Sept. 16 the club
played host to the Howson Mills
from Blyth employee tournament
fun day. The 60 golfers played nine
holes of golf followed by a
beef and ham buffet in the dining
lounge.
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club is having its 10th annual fall
ham and beef barbecue this Sunday,
Sept. 23 from 5 - 7 p.m. catered by
Jeff Cardiff. For tickets call the pro
shop or talk to any golf or curling
member.

The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning travelled to Strathroy and
Kitchener this past weekend and
came away with two wins to open
their exhibition schedule. Saturday
saw the Lightning shut out the
Bluewater Hawks 2-0 on their home
turf. Dawn Pletsch and Lexi Smith
scored with assists awarded to Kelly
Gribbons, Cassidy Calhoun,
Courtney Surridge and Harley
Westman. Shea Tiley stopped all
Bluewater shots to earn the shutout.
Sunday’s game against the
Kitchener Lady Rangers was more
of a one-sided affair with the Bolts
coming out on top by a 6-1 score. All
three forward lines tallied for the
Lightning with many of the goals
generated off shots from the point
and three goals scored on the power
play. Westman led the way with two
goals with singles going to Ashlee
Lawrence, Sarah Biesenthal, Tori
Terpstra and Gribbons. Jordyn
Sholdice, Miranda Lantz and Smith
each earned two assists with singles
going to Westman, Lawrence,
