PeeWee Tigers take top spot in WOAA
The Brussels PeeWee Tigers had a
fantastic season winning all but
three games in WOAA action this
season. The team entered the year-
end tournament in the top of their
pool. The first game of the weekend
saw them square off against Mount
Forest. Brussels sent three different
pitchers to the mound to warm them
up for the long day of play on
Saturday. Wyatt Machan, Logan
Kellington and Justin Rogers each
pitched two solid innings however
the aggressive Mount Forest
baserunners took advantage
of opportunities and won a close
game.
Saturday began with an early
game against Wingham and the
Tigers bounced back from the
previous night with solid defence
and timely hitting to cruise to a
victory. After finishing second in
their pool, they crossed over in the
semi-final to face top-seeded
Walkerton. Walkerton had handed
two losses to Brussels this season
and the Tigers, hungry for revenge,
responded by scoring early. Machan
continued his pitching domination
while the offence kicked into high
gear eventually sending Walkerton
to the Homebrew side of the
tournament. The victory advanced
Brussels to the major championship
where they once again faced the
surprising Mount Forest team.
Despite the high temperatures
Machan stayed on the mound and
held the Tigers in the game. Much
like Friday, Mount Forest was
aggressive but the Tigers never gave
up. Down three runs in the final
inning, the rally hats were on as the
top of the order came up. Trent
Michie and Connor Bridge got on
base and were driven in by Logan
Kellington. Kellington later scored
in a close play at the plate after a
triple by Bennett Newell. With the
game tied, Machan came to the plate
and hit a deep fly ball scoring
Newell and giving Brussels the lead.
Rogers added a home run for good
measure as the Tigers were named
Major PeeWee Champions.
A number of Tigers played
multiple roles on the team this year
with a positive attitude that saw
them win with maturity and class.
Commitment, dedication and
teamwork all came together to
produce a successful championship
season. The team consisted of Mitch
and Greg Ward, Mitch McKee,
Dawson Peachey, Austin Johnson,
Brenden Howson, Bennett Newell,
Justin Rogers, Trent Michie, Logan
Kellington, Wyatt Machan, Connor
Bridge and Dylan MacNeil. The
proud coaching team of Jeff Newell,
Chris Michie and Scott Johnson
would like to thank players,
scorekeepers and parents for a
rewarding year.

both teams had their eye on the
prize. In the bottom of the second
inning Port Perry’s leadoff hitter
drilled a lightning line drive back at
the pitcher’s mound knocking Otter
pitcher Matt Wardrop to the ground.
Wardrop left the game not to return.
This changed the momentum of the
game and Teeswater was unable to
recover. Port Perry seized the
opportunity and took home the gold
9-3 over Teeswater.
Teeswater proudly brought home
a silver medal. In the true spirit of
sportsmanship, Otters and Jacks
players were able to spend some
time celebrating and making friends
off the field before heading home to
Ontario as the top two teams of the
tournament.
After so many meetings over the
past years, it was great for the
players to make lasting friendships
in what was an amazing season for
both clubs. The boys are looking
forward to another great campaign
in 2013.
The Otters wish to thank the
parents, coaching staff and the many
businesses, individuals and
community supporters who helped
make their “Otters on the East
Coast” fundraising efforts such a
success. Thank you, your generosity
is unparalleled.

Lightning make A Division in year-starting tourney
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning kicked off their season
this past weekend, competing in the
Stoney Creek Midget Showcase
against 40 of the top Midget-aged
girls teams from both Canada and
the United States. The Lightning
finished the round-robin portion of
the tournament with a win and two
ties, good enough to put them into
the 'A' Division for the Playoff
Round.
The Bolts started off the
tournament with a 0-0 draw against
the Pennsylvania Quakers despite
out-shooting their opponents 33-11.
In their second game, the Lightning
found their scoring touch, defeating
the Pittsburgh Elite 4-2. Early
Saturday morning, the Bolts were
back on the ice to face the
Durham West Lightning, tying them
2-2.
Unfortunately for the Lightning,
they drew top-ranked St. Mary's
Academy (a girls prep school in
Winnipeg) for their first round play-
off match-up. The Lightning lost 5-3
despite a late game come-back
attempt. Scoring on the weekend for
the Lightning were Lexi Smith and
Kelly Gribbons with three goals
each, Cassidy Colhoun, Harley
Westman and Ashlee Lawrence.
Assists were awarded to Westman
(3), Dawn Pletsch (3), Courtney
Surridge (2), Jordyn Sholdice, Ciara
Lark, Jamie Simpson and Sara
Biesenthal.
This year's Midget AA Lightning
roster is comprised of girls from a
large geographic cross-section of
Mid-Western Ontario. In goal are
Shea Tiley (Owen Sound) and
Morgan Baker (Kincardine). The
defence is made up of Kailyn Soers
(Mildmay), Sarah Biesenthal
(Chepstow), Maddie Duncan
(Kincardine), Jamie Simpson
(Sebringville), Ciara Lark
(Mildmay) and Jordyn Sholdice
(Brussels). The front end has Ashlee
Lawrence (Owen Sound), Lexi
Smith (Brussels), Tori Terpstra
(Atwood), Kelly Gribbons (Port
Elgin), Courtney Surridge
(Kincardine), Miranda Lantz
(Mildmay), Harley Westman
(Milverton), Cassidy Colhoun
(Kincardine) and Dawn Pletsch
(Mitchell). Head coach Joe Chaffe
is joined by assistant coach Bill Lark
and trainers Janette Hammell and
Wendy Lantz. Good Luck to
the girls this year. Follow the

On Friday, Sept. 7 at 4:15 p.m., the
final inspections were finished and,
just over 12 hours later, the Queens
Bakery on Queen Street in Blyth
opened its doors.
The espresso bar, a joint effort
between Les and Jackie Cook and
Rick and Anne Elliott, is now open
daily serving espresso, coffee and
their flagship drink; The Queen Bee,
a flavoured machiatto, as well as
baked goods to accompany the
coffee.
“The opening was awesome,”
Anne said. “It was very soft. We
weren’t really planning for an
opening and then all the inspections
and last minute jobs just kind of
came together. We had four
inspections between Wednesday and
Friday and we passed them all.”
The shop sells espresso,
cappuccino and drip coffee as well
as a bakery menu that is set to be
continuously expanding.
“We sell, food-wise, pretty much
anything and everything that goes
well with coffee,” Anne said. “We
have muffins, mini loaves of bread,
pies, tea biscuits, monkey bread,
biscotti, cookies, tarts... pretty much
anything you’d be looking for.”
All the baking is done on-site by
Anne and Jackie, while Anne and
Les are fully certified baristas,
having attended the Canadian
Academy of Baristas. The shop
works with homemade food, not pre-
mixed ingredients.
“It’s what we’re all about; getting
back to basics,” Anne said, adding
that attitude is really what they hope
will guide the shop. “The experience
of this is all about coming in, sitting
down and enjoying what you’reeating and drinking. So many placeshave drive throughs and you rushthrough. We want people to come in
and enjoy what they’re having and
relax.”
While it’s not set up yet, the
location will also be a wi-fi hotspot
for people to be able to sit and stay
connected.
The shop also features cheese
from Blyth Farm Cheese and will be
bringing in loose-leaf teas in a
variety of flavours.
Their espresso and coffee brews
are also made locally by Coastal
Coffee Company, a supplier from St.
Joseph’s.
Featuring local products is one of
the primary foci of the store
according to Anne.
“We want to focus on local
businesses and ingredients because
it’s important to support each other
in the community,” she said, adding
that they were just returning the
favour. “We had a lot of support
while we were building and
renovating. People were excited to
see what was going on and their
excitement kept us interested in the
project.”
Les agreed, saying the support was
awesome.
Through a Facebook page titled
Queens Bakery Blyth, people both in
and out of the area were able to
follow the progress of the build and
offer support there as well.
The project started when the four
co-owners bought the building
because they were interested in it.
After some time they felt that Blyth
could use an espresso bar and
decided to take on the project, both
building it and running it
themselves.
“We all thought it would be a cool
project and the moment we walked
in we saw the building had great
potential,” Anne said.
The building project was full of
great surprises according to Anne
and Les, who said that, from
discovering the brickwork on the
walls to the colour scheme that
would match it, the entire project
was great.
Anne said she was ecstatic when
they discovered the original tin
ceilings and the brickwork and the
original flooring was also something
they were excited about.
The foursome was also able to
keep with the heritage of the
building by re-using a lot of the
materials they found as well as
appropriating materials from other
places to keep with the aesthetic.
“We reused the windows from the
front of the store both to decorate
and to create mirrors,” Les said. “We
even used a floor grate that we had
to move for reconstruction.”
Other repurposed items include
pieces of seats from the Blyth
Memorial Hall that had been retired
which were turned into everything
from parts of the counter at the store
