Historic airplane touches down at Brussels Aerodome
NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Leading his team
Ross Adams, left, flew from Mississauga to Brussels in his
Stinson V77 Gullwing to check on another plane of his, a
Taylorcraft BC-12D that was being repaired by Ross
Hemingway of Hemingway aviation. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
A historic airplane made its way
to Brussels last week as a Stinson
(Vultee) V77 Gullwing touched
down at the Armstrong Aerodome
on Sept. 6.
Ross Adams of Mississauga, the
plane’s co-owner, flew to the village
to meet with Ross Hemingway of
Hemingway Aviation. Hemingway
was in possession of Adams’s other
plane, a Taylorcraft BC-12D, as it
was having some repairs done.
Adams, and his co-owner Soren
Christiansen, bought the plane last
November and Adams says the
plane only needed minor
improvements to be ready for flight.
The pair had the plane in the air by
January of this year.
Adams said some work was done
to the plane’s propellor and its
annual thorough check-up was
required, but other than that, the
plane was good to go.
The history behind the plane,
Adams said, is what first attracted
him to the machine. The plane,
which was originally called a
Stinson AT-19, was flown out of
London, England in 1944 during the
Second World War. When the plane
made it back from the war, it was
“civilianized” and renamed the
Stinson (Vultee) V77 Gullwing. The
name “Gullwing” comes from the
unique wing design, Adams said, which resembles a gull in flight.Adams said that as soon as he andChristiansen heard the plane was up
for sale, they knew they had to see it,
and once they did, they knew they
had to buy it.
“I just love the look of it,” Adams
said, “and when we both saw it, we
knew it was something that had to
happen.”
Adams has been flying planes for
Air Canada for 33 years, but says
there is just something special about
flying the Gullwing.
“It’s a beautiful airplane to fly,”
Adams said. “Just to know you’re
flying a piece of history is amazing.”
Adams was only in Brussels forthe afternoon, as he stopped byHemingway’s for a look at his plane, had some lunch in the village and
then flew back to Mississauga.

At the Branch
Legion hosts many meetings
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It was a week of meetings for
many at the Brussels Legion Branch
and away from the Branch. Tuesday
evening the Youth Education
Seminar was held downstairs at the
Branch. Comrade John Lowe,
District Youth Chairman, conducted
the meeting. There are many
changes within the program coming
about and it was a well-informed
meeting.
The Cadets met upstairs for their
first meeting of the year. I am
