(Jim Brown photo) The Walton Brewers only needed five innings to score a 9-1 decision over the Wroxeter Royals in Huron County Fastball League play on Aug. 29 at the Walton ballpark. The Brewers put the game out of reach with six runs in the first inning and added three more in the third inning. Adam Verkley hit a double and single for the Brewers with Bruce Pearn and Ron Stevenson each rapping out a pair of singles. Scott Cox had a double and Jeff Robinson rapped out a single in a winning effort. Cox went the distance on the mound to pick up his first win of the season. Veteran player Scott Leonhardt said Cox threw an excellent game to collect his first win of the season. “Everyone on the team played well,” he said. He added that the bats were back at the plate, with some good hits. “The Brewers are back,” said Leonhardt. The Brewers were in Brussels last night (Wednesday) for a game against the Tigers. The year-end tournament is being played in Brussels, Sept. 21-23. By Jim Brown The Citizen Brothers face off as Tigers face Hitmen in HCFL action The Daw brothers were in a battle on the mound in Huron County Fastball League at the Optimist ballpark in Brussels on Aug. 29. Righthander Shawn Daw was pitching for the Brussels Tigers and lefthander Jason Daw was pitching for the Wingham Hitmen. Shawn Daw went the distance on the mound and recorded nine strikeouts as the Tigers prevailed 6- 5. Jason Daw hurled only five innings and had eight strikeouts. Trevor Seip pitched the final two innings for the Hitmen and recorded one strikeout. After Jason Kellington tripled in the bottom of the seventh inning, with the score tied at five, Adam Corbett hit a single to bring Kellington home as the winning run. Ty Sebastian connected for a two- run inside-the-park home run in the first inning. Contributing singles to the victory were Gene Johnston, Corey Campbell and Corbett. Kellington also had a triple. Veteran player Doug Shaw said the Tigers got off to a rough start. “We committed a number of errors early in the game,” he said, “but, we were able to get into the game and play better.” He added that the Tigers’ bats were able to get some hits. “Shawn Daw pitched really well for us,” he said. “Adam Corbett came through with a key pinch hit to bring in the winning run for us.” The Tigers hosted the Walton Brewers last night (Wednesday) at the Optimist ballpark in Brussels and then travel to Belmore on Friday for an 8 p.m. contest against the Stingers to conclude the regular season. By Jim Brown The Citizen Tigers tie Sebringville Sting 1-1 Ty Sebastian of the Brussels Tigers was involved in a pitchers’ duel with Chad Fink of the Sebringville Sting on Aug. 27 as the two teams played to an eight inning 1-1 draw in Huron County Fastball League at the Optimist ball park in Brussels. Sebastian had 13 strikeouts while going the distance on the mound. Ben Pletch connected for a triple for the Tigers while Sebastian had a double. Getting single base hits were Jamie Hickling, Adam Corbett and Shawn Daw. Veteran player Doug Shaw said it was a well played game. “Both pitchers pitched well,” he said. He added that neither team was able to get the bats going. “It was a tight game. The games in the year- end tournament are going to be tight just like this game,” said Shaw. By Jim Brown The Citizen Mites named tri-county champs The Brussels Mites “B” squad won the Mite Tri-County Fastball Championship on the weekend of Aug. 24-26 in Brussels. The team opened the 14-team championship tournament with a 10- 5 win over Crediton. The Brussels “B” squad then received a game two bye for having the best record in the North Division. Their third game was against a very good second place Wingham team. The Brussels team scored three in their final at bat to send the game to extra innings. It took four more innings, but finally the team came out with a 5-4 victory. The championship game, to no one’s surprise, was to play with their cross-town rivals, the third place Brussels “A” team The “A” side jumped out to a first inning 5-0 lead. But the Brussels “B” squad fought back and once again scored in their final at bat to force extra innings. Three extra innings later, the Brussels “B” Mites were 6-5 winners and Tri-County champions. Team members include Devin Bridge, Wade Machan, John Nesbit, Jaimesen Newell, Rylan Jacklin, Allison Stevenson, Charles Hoy, Darcy Fear, Anna Fear, Perrin Patterson, Jackson McDonald Inglis, Allyson Barbour and Chris Pennington. As well as call-ups, Owen Newell and Lucas Jacklin. The team is coached by Mark Pennington. OPP say be wary of scammers The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has been receiving many reports of financial scams targeting seniors and other vulnerable people across the province. In the most recent scam, individuals claiming to be investigators from one of Canada’s chartered banks convince victims to withdraw funds for use as evidence to assist with a bogus theft investigation involving bank personnel. After the money is withdrawn and handed to the phoney bank inspector, the victim is told to go home and wait for a call confirming the money has been re- deposited in their account, the OPP says. Unfortunately, that call never comes. In several recent cases, seniors have complied and were subsequently defrauded of thousands of dollars. Guard against becoming a victim before providing money or credit card information. Check with another family member or trusted friend to verify the information. Remember, neither your financial institution nor a police investigator will ever ask you to withdraw money from your account or assist with an undercover investigation. It is also vitally important that the incident be reported if it does occur, to allow police to investigate and charge the perpetrators. If you suspect you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, contact your local police service, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1- 888-495-8501, or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) and report the crime.
