September is one of those months that just has a lot of things and feelings happening and so the anticipation grows. For the children it’s a new school year, new classes, new teachers, new routines, new friends, so new beginnings. For the out-of-school crowd, summer feels like it’s over, no one says it is and the calendar says it isn’t, but it sure feels over, and so an ending. Preparations are happening all over, as kids of many ages get ready for the first day of classes. For the wee ones, new clothes and lunch boxes are needed, for those a little older shoes and pencils, jackets and backpacks need checked, while the ones heading to the city for higher learning have their desks and beds, chairs and computers all ready for the start of class. Mothers take a moment, to wonder where the summer, and even the year, went as once again that wee soul is taking another independent step. Oh sigh. Algonquin Park was our sleeping spot last week. It’s one of those amazing places in Ontario. For well over 100 years campers and hikers, fishermen and boaters have shared this great forest with the loggers and the animals. Amazingly, everyone seems to continue to thrive. Sitting in Rock Lake in a canoe with only a loon for company, not Ralph, it is serene and pristine. Considering over a million visitors were in Algonquin Park last year, it’s a sheer wonder that when we took one of the hiking trails, we were near the three-kilometre mark before we saw anyone. It’s good to know that places of peace are still available to the public. As we get ready for autumn, take a look at your life and see what charitable organization fits you. In our area we have many choices of where to give our time and money, so get more out of life and volunteer. Dining for Seniors on specific Thursdays needs helpers, cooks and servers are always needed at Soup & More 2 on Fridays and clerks are needed at the 5R’s and that’s just a start of fun things you could do to help in our community. Give it some thought and then call. Enjoy the warm days of September. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY By Jo-Ann McDonaldThe month of August ended with the monthly executive meeting held on Aug. 28. There were only six Comrades attending, as other Comrades were attending meetings elsewhere on behalf of the Brussels Legion Branch. Reports were heard from the treasurer, canteen chairman, catering, fish fry, sportsand the acting house chairman. Requests for funds were dealt with and one was approved. The accessibility committee presented the design most favoured by them and will proceed with calling for a Notice of Motion at the September meeting. There are a few repairs that need to be addressed with the PAsystem and electrical work that needs to be done. The appropriate people will be called. September begins and the normal routine returns. The Brussels Legion Army Cadet Corp 2967 resumes just like school and meets on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Young people between the age of 12 and 19 areinvited to come out and learn what Cadets are all about. It is a program designed to develop self-confidence and leadership skills. Youth will learn a variety of skills such as target shooting, parachuting, abseiling, camping and survival skills. They will be able to participate in biathlon and different sport activities, learn basic first aid and learn about search and rescue techniques. It offers a wide variety of activities to interest any young person. Come out and meet the officers and Corp members any Tuesday evening. Comrades Deb Caan and Mable Glanville attended seminars for seniors and veteran services on Tuesday evening at the Goderich Legion Branch. This was the final week for the Brussels Community Bible Chapel to hold services at the Branch. They will be returning to the former Brussels Public School, now the Brussels Business and Cultural Centre, to hold their services. We have been pleased to have them at the Branch and have appreciated their many acts of helpfulness during their stay. The final 140th Homecoming meeting was held at the Branch on Wednesday evening. They enjoyed a social evening following the reports. We extend our best get-well wishes and a speedy recovery to Comrade Catrina Josling who was involved in a motor vehicle collision. She suffered numerous fractures and at time of writing is in a Wingham Hospital. We hope she is doing well and will soon be home.
