is living with some form of dementia
show your support by getting
involved in Coffee Break. All
donations go to local programs and
support services right here in Huron
and you’ll also be contributing to the
national research initiatives with
hope that together we can find a
cure.
Anyone can take part in this do-it-
yourself fundraiser by making a
donation in exchange for a cup of
coffee. It can be as simple as hosting
a coffee party at home, in the office
or a public venue, or as elaborate as
organizing a coffee-thon using social
media. This year’s national target
goal is $1.5 million. Hosts receive a
kit complete with coffee, posters,
donation box and as a special thank
you, new this year, a complementary
tote bag. If you’re unable to host a
break come on out to an established
one. For a donation, get aMcDonalds coffee and muffin at thesecond annual Alzheimer HuronDrive Thru Coffee Break at Willy’s
Burger Stop on Hwy. 8 from 7-10
a.m. Thursday Sept. 20. All coffee
and muffins are generously provided
by McDonalds, and thanks to event
sponsors United Communities
Credit Union and 104.9 The Beach.
McDonalds in Goderich and Exeter
are also hosting their own Coffee
Breaks during the breakfast hours of
Sept. 13. Swing by and show your
support to any events you can and
help to establish a local awareness
that will make a big difference in the
fight against Alzheimer’s and other
dementias.
With the numbers of Canadians
affected by dementia growing each
year, the need for increased funding
is crucial,” says Jeannette Sears,
Public Education Coordinator of
Alzheimer Society of Huron County.
“Access to services like counselling,
day programs and educational
material care can make all thedifference in the way families livewith this devastating disease.”Dementia is a major health issue
in Canada; the World Health
Organization called it a “ticking time
bomb” in its recent report
Dementia: A Public Health Priority.”
Dementia affects over 500,000
Canadians today and will rise to 1.1
million by within approximately 25
years. Older Canadians are at an
increased risk, after 65 the risk for
dementia doubles every five years,
and according to the 2011 Canada
Census, 22.8 per cent of the
Canadian population will be 65 and
older by 2031.
Dementia’s steadily increasing
numbers will also have a tremendous
impact on caregivers who already
spend 231 million hours per year
caring for someone with dementia.
That number is expected to jump to
756 million hours per year by 2038.
Family caregivers also experience
higher levels of stress and other
health-related conditions. “The need for our caregiversupport and education programs willonly continue to grow,” adds Sears.
“These opportunities provide a safe
environment for caregivers to learn,
share and help each other. It’s not
just about getting information, it’s
creating friendships in a supportive
environment. Our clients gain the
strength and confidence they need to
care for family members at home
well and keep them home longer. We
are encouraging our local
community to get involved as much
as possible in order to keep these
groups going.”
Coffee Break officially kicks off
