SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED Huron OPP officers have investigated five cases of suspicious salespeople going door to door in Huron County neighbourhoods earlier this month. Residents in Goderich, Brussels and Blyth have had to deal with sales agents employing unscrupulous tactics trying to make a sale. In the reported cases the scammers have claimed to be employed with legitimate home energy companies. In some of these cases the sales agents have appeared at the doorstep without identification or a company vehicle. The scammers will often ask to take a look at your hot water heater tank. After a quick check of the tank they will tell you that the tank is in poor repair and needs to be immediately replaced. Other times they will ask to look at the your hydro bill and will offer you an “incredible deal”. Some the misleading practices employed are as follows: • Telling you that your current energy provider is no longer in business and they are taking over the contract • Dressing in a uniform to imply they work for a utility provider • Telling you that your hot water tank needs to be replaced by a Canadian product • Showing you false safety bulletins claiming you need to replace your tank Huron County OPP is reminding residents of the following suggestions in an effort to protect residents from being duped: • There is no obligation to open your door and allow a stranger into your home • You never have to provide a copy of your hydro bill on demand • Call your current provider to verify claims • Never feel pressured to sign a contract; take your time and review it carefully • Under the Ontario Consumer Protection Act all consumers have the right to cancel a contract, for any reason if it is within the 10-day “cooling off” period • If you want them to leave, ask them to and if they don’t call police. Trust your instincts and don’t be misled by a scamming sales agent at the door. Council considers lane closures Morris-Turnberry councillors decided, at their Aug. 14 meeting, that they want longer to consider the ramifications of proposed lane closures in Lower Town Wingham. Council held a meeting with Lower Town landowners in April to discuss a move to deal with closure of all unused lanes in the area rather than have different landowners approach council each year to have lanes closed. At the Aug. 14 meeting, Michie methodically went through the 83 parcels of land which include 157 original lots, indicating which landowners were in favour of closing the lanes or unopened street allowances and are willing to pay the legal costs to receive the land, and which were not. Councillors were faced with the situation where some neighbours on some lanes were willing to share the costs and some not. “We wanted to stop the one [closing] here and one there,” said Councillor Neil Warwick. “This isn’t going to accomplish that.” Councillors voted to defer a decision on how to proceed until they’d had a chance to digest all the information presented. *** Steve Fortier, chief building official, reported nine building permits were issued in July including one home, two agricultural accessory buildings and one for an industrial facility valued at $547,000. So far in 2012 there have been 55 permits issued worth $3.35 million in construction. *** A bylaw was approved for a development agreement with Green’s Meat Market and Abbatoir Ltd. for the extension of municipal services. By Keith Roulston The Citizen Council to stay out of turbine contract talks OPP warn of scam Continued from page 1 answer the questions of the groups but indicated that when it comes to issues like the annual payouts by the K2 Wind Energy project, council has little to no say in the issue. “As far as negotiating the Community Renewable Energy Benefit, that’s between the property owners, their neighbours and K2 Wind,” he said. “Council has no say in that issue.”
