THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2012.Blyth Festival Singers looking for volunteersIf you ever have the desire to breakout into song – in the shower, in thecar, maybe at your neighbour’sinfamous karaoke night – you should embrace it whole-heartedly. Singing not only feels good, it can enhance your well-being, reduce your feelings of pain and even prolong your life. And you don’t have to be a professional to reap the health benefits of singing! The Blyth Festival Singers, a non- auditioned community choir under professional direction, is calling for new members to join at their first practice on Wednesday, Sept. 5 in the June Hill Room. This space above the Blyth Theatre administration building, can be accessed from the back door off King Street. Practices start at 8 p.m. sharp every Wednesday. Registration starts at 7:30 p.m. New members can have a trial period for the month before paying. Registration is half price fornew members and secondarystudents. This year’s excitingconcert season, with global music as its theme, consists of three major performances per year and some guest performances. The year is divided into three terms, so members are welcome to join us for one or all of the terms, as they are able. Still wondering if the Blyth Festival Singers are for you? Here are some more compelling reasons to join the Blyth Festival Singers and enjoy some healthy singing: • Singing builds confidence and self expression – Using your voice to sing, rather than simply carry out a conversation, offers unique benefits. Singing liberates our inner voices to the body; by varying pitch, harmony and dynamics, it gives us a broader vocabulary to express ourselves.• Singing boosts the immunesystem and well-being and createshigher levels of immunoglobulin A and cortisol. Just listening to the music does not have this effect, nor does just singing with your throat. Choral singing teaches you the proper way to sing from your belly, which promotes a healthy lymphatic system and a healthy immune system. Singing improves lung capacity and posture – All that breath control even helps reduce the effects of apnea, snoring and asthma! • Singing reduces stress and pain – It’s been linked with a lower heart rate, decreased blood pressure, and reduced stress and less depression. Singing is therapeutic, a chance to leave your cares behind, generate some endorphins and relax! And if you’re hurting, singing blocks some neural pathways that pain travelsthrough. So sing your cares away!• Singing keeps you young –Studies on singing seniors indicated that they feel better physically and psychologically, their speaking voice maintains its strength, they breathe easier and remember things better. They even have fewer eyesight problems! • Singing exercises your brain – The part of the brain that works with speech is different than the part that processes music. Memory for singing is preserved forever in thebrain. Learning to read music, followdirections, project your voice, all usedifferent parts of the brain. • Singing is fun and you can make even more beautiful music when you multiply the participants by 40 or more! So come for the fun and friendship and we can make beautiful music together!
