Late-inning run puts
Barons over Rangers
The Blyth Barons scored in the
bottom of the seventh inning on
Aug. 21 to claim a 4-3 decision
over the Zurich Rangers in a Huron
County Fastball League contest
played at the Blyth ballpark.
Dana Doherty hit a pinch-hit
double to lead off the bottom of the
seventh inning. Steve Hewitt re-
entered the game to run for
Doherty. Darcey Cook came to bat
and laid down a bunt which the
catcher decided to throw to third
base in an effort of get Hewitt. The
throw was not caught by the third
baseman and went through to the
outfield. Hewitt got up and ran
home with the winning run.
To go along with Doherty’s
double, Chris Stewart and D. Cook
each had a pair of singles. Casey
Boven and S. Hewitt contributed
one single each to the victory.
Adam Cronin went the distance
on the mound to pick up the win.
Veteran player Mike McDonald
said it was a well-played game.
“Both pitchers pitched well,” he
said.
Doherty came in and hit a pinch-
hit double that led to the winning
run. “Both sides had great defence,”
he said.
According to McDonald, Cronin
pitched his second consecutive
excellent game after pitching the
Barons to a 12-4 decision over the
Belmore Stingers on Aug. 17.

Members of the Wingham Golf
and Curling Club took full
advantage of the fantastic weather
this past week.
On Tuesday, Aug. 21 the senior
men had 20 golfers hit the links.
Brian Carr had the hot hand,
shooting a 38 for low gross while
also taking home second-place
money. Glenn McMichael for the
second consecutive week placed
first with John Tyrell, third. The
longest putt prizes were claimed by
Ray Walker and Gary Ford with
Grant Currie winning closest to the
pin.
Wednesday, Aug. 22 was Bull Day
at the club and for the first time in
three years the weatherman came to
play. Nearly 200 FM 94.5 golfers
enjoyed a great day of golf at the
club.
The Thursday night men had 66
golfers on a supper night of golf.
Don Edgar fired a one-over-par 36
to rake home low gross. Other
winners were longest drive Brendan
Chester, closest to the pin Bob
Foxton, Harry George and Andy
Williams and longest putts Bill
Robinson, John Dailleboust and Ray
Walker. Hidden score winners were
Ross Gibson, Brandon Rybicki and
Bob Dickert. This group of guys is
getting bigger and better as they
surpassed the 1,000 golfer mark for
the second year in a row a few
weeks earlier than in 2011.
On Saturday, Aug. 25 the club
held the annual lefty/righty golf
tournament. The lefties, with some
minor controversy, reclaimed the
trophy and bragging rights for
another year.
Saturday the club was also hosted
the wedding of Cynthia and Brad
Brebner. After the ceremony on the
golf course the 60 family and friends
joined together in the dining lounge
for a roast turkey and beef buffet
followed by the reception.
Congratulations to the happy
couple.
On Tuesday, Sept. 4 the ladies will
be competing for the Conron trophy.
This is a nine-hole event played
throughout the day for the gals with
36 or better handicaps. The John
Malick Memorial senior men
tournament will be held on
Wednesday, Sept. 12.
