Brussels to be featured in Canadian television showA camera crew will be in Brussels
later this month filming for a
television series called
Rediscovering Canada, that will be
set to air in 2013.
Brussels has now been included in
an episode that was scheduled to
include just Seaforth, however, the
episode has been extended to include
Brussels, as well as Seaforth.
Producer Dr. Christopher Cooper
has already had members of his crew
in Huron East filming for the series,
but the principle photography will
take place on Sept. 15 and 16 in
Seaforth and Brussels when Cooper
arrives.
Huron East Economic
Development Officer Jan Hawley
says the whole partnership with
Cooper and Rediscovering Canada
began when a short promotional
video was made on Seaforth and its
heritage properties.
Hawley and a crew from Huron
County made a video highlighting
the heritage properties and measures
to preserve history in Seaforth, along
with a biography on Pete Klaver, theman who has been taking on many ofthese restoration projects, that wasrecently recognized with a national
award.
Hawley said that through getting
that video out to as many people as
she could, she caught the eye of
Cooper and his series (as well as his
publication Edifice Magazine) and
he wanted to get involved and run an
episode of the show focusing on
Huron East.
Hawley, however, has been busy
working to spruce up the Village of
Brussels in preparation for Cooper’s
visit.
Hawley is in the process of
designing and placing murals in the
windows of Brussels Foodland
displaying the two walking trails
recommended by University of
Waterloo students earlier this year.
The murals will also include 40
pictures of sites and landmarks along
the trails that will make the murals
more appealing to the eye.
Hawley’s first connection to
Cooper happened on Facebook and
Hawley says she nearly missed his
message because of how new she is
to the social networking website.“He sent me a note on Facebook,”Hawley said, “and I didn’t find it fora month.”
However, once she did see the
message, she and Cooper began
discussing the possibility of a Huron
East episode of Rediscovering
Canada.
Hawley says the series will help
Huron East reach a global audience
and not only will it help tourism, but
also economic development. She
says it will help make the
communities seem more attractive to
potential businesses. The series was scheduled toinclude only Seaforth, but Coopercame back to Hawley asking if she
had any ideas for more content, and
she immediately thought of
including Brussels.
Hawley says she hopes to “push
the envelope” with the Brussels
content in the series, promoting the
community at large.
Hawley says she hopes the series
will give the communities of
Brussels and Seaforth a bigger
audience than they’ve ever had
before by featuring many appealingaspects of the communities as wellas some of their more colourfulcharacters.
For example, in Brussels, Hawley
says, she hopes Cooper will be
interviewing local historian Don
McNeil and taking a tour through his
museum.
The program is scheduled to be
broadcast in 2013 on ibroadcast
Public Internet Television (IBITV),
airing for one week.
