(Denny Scott photo) Justin Field of Clinton was found guilty of operating a motor vehicle while disqualified by Judge R.G.E. Hunter in Wingham court on Aug. 22. Field pled not guilty to the charge and proceeded to a trial, insisting that he had not been behind the wheel on Sept. 12, 2011. Wingham Police officer Wade Smith testified at the trial, saying that he observed a pickup truck coming out of a seldom-used laneway just south of Wingham where mischief often occurred and became suspicious. Smith said he began pursuing the truck, not activating his emergency lights, and the vehicle began to speed up. Smith said it was obvious to him that the driver of the vehicle was attempted to avoid contact with the police. The truck then turned right onto Amberley Road and made a quick left turn into the Tim Hortons parking lot. Smith said he continued to drive his marked cruiser north on Hwy. 4, entering the parking lot from the Hwy. 4 entrance and cutting the vehicle off. Upon parking and getting out of his cruiser, Smith said he observed a female and male get out of the car; the male looked to be getting out of the driver’s side, he said. Smith said the male identified himself as Todd Logan by way of a Health Card and the female identified herself as Vicky Reilly, also by way of a Health Card. Smith said he began talking to both of the occupants when a third party came from the Tim Hortons and joined into the discussion. At the time, Smith said, he was simply asking the occupants for identification, and that no one had done anything wrong. However, once the third person joined the conversation, Smith checked into the driver’s licence of Justin Field and found him to be disqualified from driving. Smith said Field admitted to driving the car, which at the time, didn’t raise any red flags with him, as he did not know him to be a disqualified driver. Smith said all three had “lengthy” criminal records after investigating them further. On the witness stand, however, Field testified he was not driving the car, saying that it was Logan who had been driving. Field said his response to Smith when he was asked if he was driving was “what if I was driving?” Field said the group was out dropping off Logan’s son to the son’s mother’s boyfriend’s house when they were pulled over at approximately 1:20 a.m. When questioned by Crown Attorney Laura Grant, Logan said he wouldn’t confirm or deny that he Bus Safety Tips • Keep aisles clear -- books or bags are tripping hazards and can block the way in an emergency. • Before you reach your stop, get ready to leave by getting your books and belongings together. • At your stop, wait for the bus to stop completely before getting up from your seat.
