Energy conservation credits available in North HuronPaul McGinn, the energyconservation officer for WestarioPower, was joined by JaniceHallahan, manager of customerservice for the utility company todiscuss ways business, residents,
industries and North Huron
Township could save money through
energy conservation. At North Huron Township Councilmeeting held earlier this month, theduo presented different ways thatenergy can be saved by consumersand how Westario is encouraging
people to take advantage of those
savings.
In the future, according toMcGinn, the conservation of energyis going to become more and moreimportant.“Between now and 2025, we haveto replace 80 per cent of the current
electrical system,” McGinn told
council. “There are nuclear and coal
power plants to be closed and the
power grid needs work.”
He said that current plants will be
remodelled in the near future but he
isn’t sure how long they will be
closed to do that, so trying to reduce
energy consumption is important.
He directed council and gallery
members to research different ways
that they can help both their bottom
line and the stress on the energysystem on the Ontario PowerAuthority’s conservation-focusedwebsite saveonenergy.ca“There are programs there that cansave you money and save the grid,”
he said.
Among those programs include
ways that individuals turn over
control of their appliances and
environmental systems to energy
companies to allow units like
laundry machines and air
conditioner or central air units to be
run less often or in lesser power
modes. Giving away that control can
save people money.
He also spoke of newer appliances
that can be controlled via wirelessnetworks, allowing units to be run atoff-peak hours. Examples of suchwork includes, again, laundrymachines being run at night as wellas other appliances like dishwashers.
Other savings can be realized with
construction benefits for new homes
and benefits to those renovating
older homes.
He also outlined programs in
which old appliances can be
exchanged, old freezers and
refrigerators can be picked up and
even a system through which
ratepayers can receive monetary
bonuses simply for pledging to not
use as much electricity.
McGinn also stated that
alternative energies are important to
the energy authority, including wind,
solar and biomass systems, and that
using them is a priority.
Council thanked McGinn for the
presentation and, later in the
meeting, discussed changing some
of their current power usage systems
to try and realize savings.

Happy birthday to Connor
Brooks who celebrates Sept. 1 and
Hanna Boven, Sept. 2.
Over 30 Edgar relatives travelled
to Petrolia for their annual summer
pool party hosted by Bev and Mike
Park. Many enjoyed the pool while
others visited around the pool. The
weather was beautiful with a gentle
breeze blowing to keep it from
getting too hot. Everyone enjoyed
the pot luck supper before returning
to their homes. They were from
Aylmer, Brigden, Clinton,
Goderich, London, Lucknow,
Petrolia, St. Catharines and
Wingham.
Deb and Fred Hakkers and
myself travelled to Sarnia to visit
with Verna and John Evans before
attending the Edgar summer pool
party in Petrolia.
Our little village of 1,000 people
will swell to become a village of
thousands as the Huron Pioneer
Thresher and Hobby Association
gets ready for their annual steam
show Sept. 7, 8 and 9. This makes a
very busy weekend for many Blyth
residents.

Daycare cost increased
North Huron Township Council
implemented a 50-cent per day
increase in child care costs at the
suggestion of Recreation and
Facilities Manager Pat Newson.
The increase, one that has
occurred annually for several years,
was paired with several other
changes including the removal of
the Best Start program and busing
due to the inclusion of early-year
learning in the school systems.
Before and After school programs
will be available at the Turnberry
Campus of Maitland River
Elementary School this year starting
in September and at the Maitland
River Elementary School in Sept.
2013. The program will not be
offered at the Wingham campus of
the school but will be offered at
Sacred Heart School in Wingham.
