(Photo submitted) Auburn-area gardening expert Rhea Hamilton-Seeger will be sharing her passion for colours and composition with some like-minded artists at the Goderich Co-op Gallery. September 10 Hamilton-Seeger will be addressing the members of the Co-op to explain to them how maintaining a garden is really a kind of art. “I’m going to talk about how growing and maintaining a garden is just like painting,” she said. “I recently started re-learning how to paint and I realized that looking at an art piece is very similar to growing a garden.” The idea came to Hamilton-Seeger when she found some older pictures of her property when she arrived. “The photos are from 35 years ago,” she said. “There were three cedars, each was about 18 inches high in the middle of the lawn and that’s how I started.” As part of the presentation she plans on contrasting those pictures with pictures of how her landscaping looks now with gardens sprawling over her lot.“You have to do some of the sameprocesses when painting that you dowhen gardening,” she said. “You start with your anchor point and you follow your feelings. That’s the important part: you have to do what you want to do. If you want gnomes in your garden, have gnomes in your garden.” She likened a blank canvas to a lot without much gardening done to it. “My pallette and my colours are the plants and the canvas is the blank landscape,” she said. Both this event, and any event where Hamilton-Seeger is asked to speak, is something she enjoys. “I’m always honoured when I’m asked to speak to a group,” she said. “It’s a thrill.” Usually, when speaking to groups, she said she knows at least one or two friends in the audience and she can really be comfortable and speak to people on a personal level. That reality will likely be the same since she was part of a group in artists in the past that shares some members with the gallery. Hamilton-Seeger’s green thumb was also displayed during theHuron-Perth Garden Tour held onJuly 14.“It was really interesting to see people coming through,” she said. “We had about 40 people here.” She said that she re-discovered the fact, through talking about other gardens, the difference between gardening in the country and the city. “We rely on different things in the country,” she said. “We use rain barrels and wells whereas in the city they have municipal water. “They also have a bit more structure because, usually the lots are smaller,” she said. “That can lead to a lot of concentrated lush gardening opportunities where, in the country, you can sprawl out a bit more.” Hamilton-Seeger’s presentation on Sept. 10 will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Goderich Co-Op Gallery on The Square. Hamilton-Seeger also writes a gardening column for The Rural Voice that can be viewed on the gardening portion of The Citizen’s website. To carry the dispatch signal to North Huron, a broadcaster will need to be installed in Hanover, and, as soon as that work is done, the system will be ready.
