Seven teams competed from all across Ontario. On the first day, Londesborough defeated Etobicoke by a score of 12-8, then lost to Simcoe in a heartbreaker, with a final score of 11-10. After too much lunch, Londesborough was soundly defeated 12-1 by London, but bounced right back with a mercy win over Brampton of 16-5. The second day of games saw Londesborough soar with two mercy wins: first, over Lanark by a score of 16-5 followed by a win over Stormont by a score of 11-1. This qualified Londesborough to move on to play for the bronze medal against Simcoe. They got their revenge on Simcoe by shutting them out until the fifth inning and defeated them 13-4 to claim the bronze. This fantastic team, which isassociated with the LondesboroughSeniors Club, represented District 29, Huron/Perth/Middlesex in the slo-pitch division and was made up of players from the Londesborough area. The team, while on the field, had to consist of two female players over the age of 55 and two male players over the age of 65. The team was made eligible for the Ontario Games by having won the District 29 regional tournament in Stratford, this past June. Although Nora Eckert, Bill Roper, Bob Armstrong, Dudley Paulton and Marlene Holman played in Stratford and helped the team to qualify for the summer games, they were unable to attend in Brampton. The team extends their sincere thanks to the firm of Elliott Nixon Brokers Inc. for supplying the team uniforms. Champions After winning bronze at the Ontario 55+ Summer Games in Brampton, the Londesborough Slo-Pitch Seniors team was all smiles. The team had their ups and downs during the tournament but eventually beat Simcoe 13-4 to claim the third place prize. Gene Johnston led off the inning with a single. He was followed to the plate by Brian McArter. McArter laid down a bunt, and the throw to first was off the mark, with Johnston able to score on the overthrow and come across the plate with the winning run. Jamie Hickling gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning as he led off with a home run. Fullarton tied the game in the top of the second inning. Shawn Daw went the distance on the mound for the Tigers to record the victory. Wade Stephenson, Johnston and McArter each rapped out a pair of singles. Jason Kellington and Adam Corbett had one single apiece. Veteran player Doug Shaw said it was a sloppy game. He indicated that the Fullarton pitcher threw a good game, with the Brussels players unable to get any good hits. “We left a lot of players on base,” he said. Shaw said Brussels pitcher Shawn Daw also threw a good game. Brussels travelled to Zurich on Sunday for a game against the Rangers. By Jim Brown The Citizen The Wingham Golf and Curling Club enjoyed a busy past week. The Tuesday night ladies kicked the week off in style holding their monthly fun night and the girls had tons of fun. The theme for the night was the Olympics and the opening ceremony saw the torch lit by Ann Ross followed by a speech from the Queen (Joyce Adams) to officially open the games. The gals played nine holes of golf with some special twists involved. The par threes had the ladies putt with miniature hockey sticks, oven mitts and even blindfolded. The team of Shirley Godfrey, Eve Rich and Linda Walker passed the drug test and were presented the gold medals with Luanne Kerr, Joanne Harrison and Gayle Neil claiming the silver and Shirley O’Malley, Bonnie Gamble and Patti Nixon taking home bronze medals. Debbie Currie, Peg Lockridge, Joyce Adams and Ann Ross did a fantastic job of putting the night together. Luanne Kerr had the dining lounge looking great with the Olympic flag and special centrepieces and the gals enjoyed a cold plate supper following the golf. The Wednesday morning senior men had 25 golfers on a sunny morning. Glenn McMichael was first-place winner followed by Gerry Edwards, second and Wayne Gordon, third. The longest putt prizes went to Steve Nixon and Bill Brown while Brian Skinn claimed closest to the pin. Don Bone and Doug Vanderwoude shared low gross both with 38. The Thursday night men again played with rain in the forecast but all 55 golfers managed to get their rounds in without any rain. The prize winners were Corey Hayter for longest drive, Mike Piliarik, Dan McBurney and Dan McPherson were closest to the pin winners with Jason Goodall, Grant Currie, Bill Kerr and Brian Carr with the longest putts. Gerald Coghlin was the hidden score winner with Ryan Chambers taking home low gross with a 38. Saturday, August 18 the club hosted the Bailey Cup. Over 20 friends and family joined together in the golfers’ lounge for breakfast followed by a nine-hole scramble. Bernie Bailey does a super job of organizing this event. This coming Saturday is the annual lefty/righty tournament with the club championship scheduled for Sept. 1 and 2. Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn Walkerton Squirts win provincial championship The Walkerton Capitals Squirt OASA team are 2012 All-Ontario Fastball Champions. Earlier this month the boys travelled to Stouffville for the 2012 OASA Squirt A Provincial Championship to compete against teams from Napanee, Belleville, Cobourg, Stouffville, Caledonia, Belmore and Kitchener-Waterloo. It was a wet, soggy weekend at the ball park for the players and fans, but all of the games on the schedule were eventually played. Walkerton started the tournament against their neighbours from Belmore and after a couple of lead changes, some mental errors and a two-hour rain delay, the Capitals came from behind in the later stages to win 9-8. Game two was against their arch rivals from the twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo. The Capitals scored five runs in the first inning and carried that lead into the sixth inning before giving up three runs to the Kolts in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Walkerton would shut the K-W offence down in the last inning to win the game 5-3. With the two wins, Walkerton now faced Caledonia in the game of undefeated teams on Sunday morning. The Capitals’ bats came alive against the Comets as they scored three runs in the second, four runs in the third, one in the fourth and six runs in the fiftht to win the game 14-4 and advance to the championship game on Sunday afternoon. On the other side of the tournament bracket, Kitchener- Waterloo would beat both Belmore and Caledonia to earn a re-match with the Capitals in the Championship game. With the tournament format being double knock-out, Kitchener-Waterloo would have to beat Walkerton twice, but the boys from the country had no intentions of playing two games. Right from the word go, the Capitals’ defence shut the door and their powerful offence sparked a flurry of hits. Walkerton would score five runs in the bottom half of the first inning and never Continued on page 10
