Weather accommodates farmers, motocross attendees
It was a good week for everyone
last week. The farmers received the
much-needed rain and then better
weather for the rest of the week
made for a successful motocross.
The population of Huron County
swelled by thousands with the arrival
of the motocross riders and families.
Hundreds of campers began the
week at the Blyth campground for
registration. They then moved very
slowly and in an orderly fashion to
the Walton raceway on Tuesday
morning. The rain on Monday
evening and then Tuesday morning
made for a difficult task to get the
campers to the sites at the back of the
Lee farm. A slower pace made for a
long day for all involved and thefinal campers made it into place by 8p.m. that night. Wednesday throughto Sunday had great weather for all.
The riders felt the temperatures were
perfect for riding – not too hot and
not too cold. The rain on Friday
night made the track a little rough,
but by the end of the day, the wind
and sun, had dried it to “awesome”
conditions.
The highlight of Friday night was
the concert by Jason Blaine. A great
crowd enjoyed the music, even
though the concert was about an
hour late starting. Reports were that
it was enjoyed by everyone
attending. Saturday was the final day
of racing for the Amateurs and
TransCan. Awards were presented in
the evening and an awesome 15-
minute fireworks display finished
the week for the amateurs and their
families to enjoy.
The Parts Canada Grand Nationals
Motocross Championship series
finale dawned a beautiful sunny day.
The crowds flowed to the Walton
Raceway to see the best of the best
race for the title of being the best inCanadian racing. Sunday was a greatday for the young racers to watch theprofessionals and to learn from
them. It was also the day to pack up
and leave for home. Racers attended
from all across Canada and many
make the trip to Walton their family
vacation for the summer.
It is a hard week for all involved in
making the TransCan a success. The
Lees, Chris, Judy and Brett and
event manager, Mark Perrin, work
for months in preparation for the
event and dealing with a plethora of
events/problems during the week.
The grounds and track staff working
at the Lees for the past weeks to get
everything ready, work long hours,
from early morning to late at night
and spend long hours keeping the
track in shape. The Walton Area
Sports Club gate staff man the
entrances from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
and deal with every excuse you canimagine as to why they don’t have topay. The Blyth Brussels MinorHockey were on garbage detail and
report the new setup for the amateurs
racers really helped to speed up their
collection of garbage each night. The
St. John crew were on site 24/7 to
deal with any and every situation.
The water tanker was kept busy
filling campers every day, all day.
The broomball team players did a
great job parking the many visitors
and spectators on Saturday and
Sunday.
It takes a lot of people to make this
event successful and a lot of donated
hours by the many groups to make
fundraising dollars for that group.
Congratulations to the Lee family on
another successful event and
congratulations to all the
hardworking volunteers who work
for their organizations.

M-T posts small deficit in 2011
Morris-Turnberry continues to be
in good financial shape, Mayor Paul
Gowing said after hearing auditor
Bill Vodden deliver the 2011
financial statement at the Aug. 14
meeting of council.
The statement showed a deficit
of $23,504 for the year compared
to a budgetted surplus of $640,000
but most of that was due to
an accounting change in payments
of capital expenses for the
installation of the Belgrave water
system. Money received had
originally been budgeted as
income for this year but
Vodden decided it shouldn’t be
categorized as income for this
year.
The municipality received $1.7
million in taxation for municipal
purposes, $1.71 million in grants,
$850,420 in user fees and $109,731
in interest and penalties, for a total
of $4,433,252.
Expenses totalled $4,456,756,
the largest areas being $1.94 million
for roads, $710,475 for protection
to persons and property (fire and
police), $634,493 for general
government, $615,197 for environ-
mental services, $326,735 for
planning and development and
$224,466 for recreation and
culture.
The municipality took $443,533
from reserves but most of this
went to capital acquisitions which,
under recently adopted standard
accounting practices increases the
capital assets which totaled $15.7
million at the end of 2011, up from
$15.4 million in 2010.
