HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2012-08-16, Page 17THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2012. PAGE 17. Lisa Thompson, Huron-BruceMPP has been asked to act as chairfor the PC South West Policy
Advisory Council (PAC), which will
provide advice and policy
suggestions to the PCs heading into
the next election.
Thompson, who has lived most of
her life in the south west region, has
professional and political knowledge
of the region, and considers herself a
strong advocate for the south west.
The PAC will work together to
create meaningful policy to bring the
region back to being a jobs and
economic hub of Ontario. There are
many small and rural towns and
businesses that need economic and
job policies that work for them—not
just the big companies from Toronto.
“The south west region is a part of
Ontario that the McGuinty Liberals
have let disintegrate,” said
Thompson. “It used to be a key area
for manufacturing with its easy
access to the United States, however
the McGuinty Liberals’ fiscal
irresponsibility coupled withskyrocketing energy costs haveforced businesses out of this region.”
Southwestern Ontario is a
prosperous agricultural region, a
tourist haven and well known for the
breeding and training of
standardbred horses—another
industry threatened by the McGuinty
Liberals’ elimination of the Slots atRacetracks program. Automanufacturing and parts and hi-tech
industries are key components of the
region’s economy. The region also
provides important transportation
routes for commercial trucking,
railway and tanker shipping from
Detroit-Windsor and Port Huron,
Michigan-Sarnia linking Canadawith major markets in the easternand mid-western United States.
“There is huge opportunity in the
south west,” said Thompson. “Small
town and rural Ontario businesses
are the pulse of communities. We
need to be doing what we can to
ensure policies reflect the diverse
business make-up of this region. With the geographical factorsworking in its favour I look forward,
with the PAC, to putting together a
plan for a prosperous south west
region.”
