Fewer than expected sign on for collection
At their July 24 meeting, Morris-
Turnberry councillors learned that
as of that date fewer than expected
residents had signed on for garbage
pickup under the new automated
collection system.
Nancy Michie, administrator
clerk-treasurer, told council that 521
properties were not on the program
for waste collection at that point. So
far 524 urban properties and 192
(out of 699) rural properties, had
signed on for garbage collection.
In other municipalities where the
switch had been made, some of
those who didn’t sign up on time
came on board later, she said.
Those who do not sign up may use
the landfill more which will increase
tipping fees there, she said.
When Councillor John Smuck
suggested that it was hardly
worthwhile for the trucks to go up
and down the rural roads to collect
garbage from fewer than 200 homes,
Michie reminded him that the trucks
would also be picking up recycling
bins which are free to residents and
therefore have had a 95 per cent
uptake.

Councillors considered two
requests for severances of surplus
farm residences at the meeting.
The request from Fear Family
Farms Ltd. to sever a house and four
acres on Cranbrook Road was
passed with little discussion as it met
all the requirements for a surplus
farm residence severance.
More discussion took place when
Levi Weber and Emanuel Martin
appeared before council to see if
councillors would support their
Bill and Muriel Coultes visited
with Rev. Stan McDonald in London
on Friday, as well as visiting Freda
Johnston in South Huron Hospital,
Exeter.
The Palmerston Marlin Bantam
Tier 2 girls fastball team played for
the provincial championship on
Sunday in Bramalea and won silver,
which enters them into the Eastern
Canada Championship in Truro,
Nova Scotia, starting Aug. 23. Mark
and Laura Matheson of Molesworth
have been two of the coaches of this
girls’ team. Bill and Muriel Coultesand Les and Donna Shaw travelled
to Bramalea on Sunday to watch the
final game, which the Marlins lost to
a strong Waterloo team.
On Sunday, Aug. 19 Sunday
worship resumes at Knox United
Church with fellowship at 10:30
a.m. and morning worship at 11 a.m.
Everyone is welcome. Knox
Vacation Bible School is on Aug. 20-
24 from 9 a.m. to noon. All children
ages four to 12 are welcome. Join us
for games, songs, stories, snacks and
crafts.
The community extends belated
anniversary greetings to Patti and
Steve Nixon on their 30th wedding
anniversary on Aug. 3.
Once again on a warm July
afternoon, over 30 celebrants and
friends enjoyed the Over 80 birthday
celebrations in Knox United Church
basement. Jack and Audrey Adair of
Molesworth entertained with
musical numbers as everyone
gathered and Muriel Coulteswelcomed everyone. She read a
poem, “The Legend of the Rain
Drop” by Helen Steiner Rice and
followed with “Things Kids
Say”.
Mackenzie Wightman played a
piano solo and was followed by a
performance by Grace Caldwell.
Mrs. Coultes read, “God enjoys a
good laugh”. Olivia Wightman then
played a piano solo and was joined
by her sister to play a duet. Nancy
Jardin gave a reading on Vitamin F –
being a friend, and Jack and Audrey
played and sang more numbers and
the audience joined in on some of
them. Mrs. Coultes then read a
couple more numbers, and Bill
Coultes accompanied by Donna
Shaw, sang two numbers. Nancy
ended the program with another
reading. Mrs. Coultes read a card
and best wishes from Rev. Tom
Murray, who is away on holidays.
Elly Dow spoke of her experiences
in Belgrave and then said the grace.Mr. Jack Shiell was asked to blow
out the candles on the cake after
everyone joined in singing happy
birthday. Members of the UCW
served cake and ice cream with the
assistance of the three girls.
Everyone enjoyed the social time
that followed and reminisced with
their friends.

McBurney, Doug and Jackie
McBurney and Jim and Marlene
McBurney in the loss of their
mother, Olive McBurney of
Fordwich who passed away at
Fordwich Village Nursing Home on
July 24.

daughter Shannon (McBurney)

away on July 26.
