BANKS, Geoff. It has been ten years
since the two cruisers flew down our
dirt road to announce the death of
my son.
“Please don’t tell me my son is
dead.” They did just that. It is
something that a parent never wants
to hear, never expects and will be
forever affected by it. Yes it has been
10 years and so many changes.
Geoff would be 27 this year. So
many of his friends are married and
have children. Tanner is married now
and a homeowner in Seaforth.
Brandy’s third baby is due in
October, Cassandra is a Vet.
Technician in Stratford. Yes life does
go on. We age, we grow, we learn.
But a day never goes by that Geoff
isn’t thought of. No matter what
happens in my life, he will never
escape that place in me where he
will be forever preserved. The place
where I can see his smile, and hear
his voice say, “I love you mom.”

KENNEDY. In loving memory of
our dear husband/father, Wayne
Kennedy who passed away August
12, 2011.
He had a nature you could not help
loving,
And a heart that was purer than gold,
And to those who knew him and
loved him,
His memory will never grow cold.
– We love and miss you, Gerrie and
family. 32-1

At the Aug. 1 Committee of the
Whole meeting of Huron County
Council, Huron County Warden
Bernie MacLellan said he had a
great time at the Brussels 140th
Homecoming celebration at the end
of July.
“The entire town got involved in
the celebration,” MacLellan said,
adding that all of the merchants, as
well as residents, got into the
western spirit of the event.
MacLellan said that he was proud
of his participation in the Boothill
Bash rodeo portion of the
celebration as a celebrity rider. He
said he had never participated in a
rodeo before and was happy to
finish in second place out of 10
participants.
MacLellan said through the event
he was able to stroke another item
off of his “bucket list”.

A birthday party was held on
Sunday of the long weekend. Pete
and Margaret Van Veen are
celebrating their 80th birthdays this
year and their family hosted a party
at the Atwood Community Park
Pavilion. The area was decorated in
the Dutch colours with red, white
and blue balloons and the guests
arrived in the late morning to enjoy
coffee and cookies. The Van Veens
have six children – Brenda, Murray,
Peter, Bonita, Douglas and Michael
(who was unexpectedly called into
work) in attendance, along with
their many grandchildren. The
family provided a delicious lunch for
the invited guests who included the
couple’s brothers and sisters and
many other relatives. Pete’s sister
Ally, wrote and presented a beautiful
verse for the couple. A lovely
birthday cake and an afternoon of
visiting was enjoyed by all.
Happy birthday to Pete
and Margaret.
We hope Betty Shaw is feeling
better after suffering a fall. She
suffered a minor head injury that
required stitches, so we hope she is
out and about again soon.
We wish Clarence and Jane White
all the best in their new home in
Wingham. We hope to see them
around the Brussels area once in
awhile. Hope to see you soon.
Our fast healing wishes go to our
daughter LeeAnn who has suffered a
broken arm.

CONDOLENCES
Our condolences to the family of
the late Rob Miller who passed away
last week. He will be missed by his
family and many friends he made
while operating Rob’s gym in
Seaforth. Visitation and service was
held at McGlynn Funeral Home in
Seaforth. He was remembered by
many whose lives he had helped
shape, with his caring and
compassionate interest in helping
young people. A reception followed
at the Walton Hall on Saturday
afternoon with nearly 50 attending.
Our sympathies to all.
At the Aug. 1 Committee of the
Whole meeting of Huron County
Council South Huron Mayor George
Robertson addressed rumours that he
would rescind his intention to run for
Huron County Warden this fall.
Roberston had announced his
intention to run earlier this year and
said rumours had been flying saying
that he would withdraw from the
race. Until Robertson declared, only
current Huron County Warden
Bernie MacLellan had declared his
intention to run for the position that
could come with an extended term of
office as a result of recommendations
made by consultant George Cuff.
Of the rumours that he was going
to withdraw from the race, Robertson
told councillors and members of the
media that was true and that he was
“in it to win it”.

After a request from Goderich
Mayor Deb Shewfelt, an update on
Central Huron’s appeal of the Huron
County Official Plan was provided
by head of the Huron County
Planning Department Scott Tousaw.
Central Huron appealed two
sections of the plan. The first dealt
with renewable energy and the
second dealt with commercial scale
water taking.
The report provided councillors
with potential budget implications of
an Ontario Municipal Board (OMB)
appeal.
“If an OMB hearing proceeds, all
parties will incur substantial costs for
legal, planning and staff time and
disbursements,” the report read.
