Morris-Turnberry is officially out of the running as a possible site for the Deep Geological Repositor Project following a decision at council’s July 24 meeting. A motion on proceeding to the next stage of allowing the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to screen Morris-Turnberry as a possible site had resulted in a deadlocked vote at the July 10 meeting. With Deputy-Mayor Jason Breckenridge present for the July 24 meeting the motion was back on the agenda. George Underwood was present at the meeting to voice his opposition to council even considering the issue. The only reason to consider it would be for the money, but why should the repository be located anywhere else than the Bruce Power site, he wondered. Mayor Paul Gowing made his case strongly for continuing to investigate the possibility to be informed. “This is all fact-finding. This is a very lengthy process,” he argued. “The decision to date has been to get information. Council’s job is to be informed and to make informed decisions. I think there is no harm done in moving to the next stage.” But Councilor Neil Warwick said he had made the motion at the last meeting to not continue the process and he would make it again. Councillor David Baker, seconded the motion. Councillors Jamie Heffer and John Smuck reiterated that council hadproceeded this far to get informationon what was involved, not becausethey were in favour of Morris- Turnberry being the site for nuclear waste. Smuck made the case that if a neighbouring municipality ended upbeing chosen for the repository,Morris-Turnberry residents wouldwant as much information as they could get. Warwick argued that if a nearby municipality was being chosen,Morris-Turnberry residents wouldbe as informed as anybody becausethe process wouldn’t stop at a municipal boundary. In the end Warwick’s motion to end the exploration process wascarried by a four-three margin withBaker, Breckenridge, Warwick andJamie McCallum supporting it. Opposed were Gowing, Heffer and Smuck.
