The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club welcomed the much-needed
rain this past week. The grass has
started to bounce back to life and the
course remains in great shape in
spite of the long drought.
On Saturday, July 28 the club
hosted the annual Potty Cup
tournament. The record 76 golfers
greeted Al (Potty) Johnston home
from Edmonton and enjoyed a
fantastic day of golf and laughter.
The day finished with a three-way
tie for first at 10 under par. After a
playoff, the guest of honour and
defending champion Potty presented
the trophy to the team of Brian
Flachs, Perry Davies, Rob Ferrier
and Murray Cassidy. This entire
great group of guys exemplify the
true meaning of friendship and
sportsmanship.
In regular league action the
Wednesday morning senior men had
25 golfers out on a beautiful day.
Steve Nixon led the way taking
home first place honours as well as
closest to the pin. Bill Brown placed
second with Lloyd Lamont third.
The longest putt winners were Ken
Saxton and Brian Carr. Don Bone’s
round of 39 was good enough for
low gross for the day.
The Thursday night men had 46
golfers hit the links in spite of the
much-needed rain throughout the
day. Trevor Hopf and Dave Bartman
shared low score with a pair of 38s.
Doug Rathwell was closest to the
pin winner with Hopf and Terry
Anger claiming longest putts. The
hidden score winners were Dennis
Knox, Corey Hayter, John
Nicholson and Norm Watson. The
ladies have a couple of busy weeks
ahead of them with the Ladies
Invitation scheduled on Wednesday,
Aug. 8 and their next fun night is
Thursday, Aug. 14.
This Friday, Aug. 3 the club is
having their monthly golf and wing
night. The large tasty wings are
available any time after 4 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 13 the club is once
again heading to the Clinton Casino.
Anyone interested should contact
the club as soon as possible.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
It is sure great to see several
families take advantage of the
Sunday afternoon day for their
children. These kids are the future of
the club and their smiling faces are a
welcome sight to everyone.

The Brussels Tigers did a good job of staying on top at home for the annual Brussels Tigers
Tournament on the weekend. Accompanied by the 140th Brussels Homecoming, lots of
current and former Brussels residents were on hand to see them drive for the gold. They were
able, on Saturday, to top the Straffordville Stealth 4-1. (Jim Brown photo)
