THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2012.Sports HCFL teams take top spots at annual Tigers tourney Huron County Fastball League teams took the top two division championships of the 41st annual Brussels Tigers fastball tournament held over the weekend with Belmore and Goderich coming out on top. Defending champions the Walton Brewers were winless in the tournament, while the Belmore Stingers claimed the AA championship and the Goderich Grizzlies took the AB title. The host Brussels Tigers reached the semi- final of the AA division, losing out to finalist Kitchener Selects. In the AA final, the Belmore Stingers defeated the Kitchener Selects 7-4 with Kris Wright going the distance on the mound for the win. Wright helped his own cause at the plate with a pair of doubles. Josh Brohman hit a double while single base hits were contributed by Eric Skinn, Mike Noble and James Needham. Scott Clarke hit a home run for Kitchener. Tim Bartram hit a double and singles were rapped out by Kevin Ryrie and Mike Brown. In the semi-final, Kitchener edged past the Brussels Tigers 4-3. Steve Scholl hit a pair of singles for the Tigers and getting one base hit apiece were Brian McArter, Ty Sebastian and Shawn Daw. The Goderich Grizzlies edged past the Straffordville Stealth 7-6 in the AB championship. Jim Rivett had a triple and single for Goderich, with Jamie Stanley getting a double and single and Jason Duckworth getting two singles. Rapping out single base hits were Darren Scholl, Mike Duckworth, Mike Hurd and Carlin Muxlow. Sean Lovell connected for a triple for the Stealth and Jeff Laidlaw got a double. Single base hits were contributed by Tyler Lynch, Brandon Baldwin, Bryan Roloson, Scott Lovell, Cassidy North and Joel Langstaff. Straffordville defeated the Wingham Hitmen in the AB semi- final. The Mitchell Royals edged past the Melbourne Mercs 5-4 in the BA championship. Dale Hopf and Jeff Wise each hit a triple for Mitchell with Kevin Ward and Jamie Ridley getting singles. Jordan Bray and Greg Eichneburger each had a double for the Mercs with Jeff Lyons getting a single. Mitchell defeated the Sebringville Sting in the BA semi-final. In the BB final, the Melbourne Mile defeated the Fullarton A’s 11-4 in five innings. Jamie Pearn connected for a home run for Fullarton while Steve Pfiefer and Scott Kemp each hit a triple. Single base hits were contributed by Bradley Siddell, Adam Pearn and Jamie Pfiefer. Ben Shields connected for a home run and added a single for the Mile. Al Chisholm had a home run and a double. Adam Fletcher had a double and single and Kevin Eickenburg rapped out a pair of singles. Getting single base hits were Jon Fletcher, Jon Dustin, Kyle Coleman and Mitch Knight. The Mile defeated Walton Brewers 10-8 in the BB semi-final. Jamie Wicke had two singles for the Brewers, Single base hits were rapped out by Darryl Houston, Jeff Robinson, Barry Young, Bruce Pearn and Matt Shortreed. Brussels opened the tournament on Friday evening with a 3-0 decision over the Sebringville Sting. Steve Scholl connected for a double while single base hits were contributed by Gene Johnston, Ty Sebastian, Shawn Daw and Jason Kellington. Sebastian went the distance on the mound for Brussels. In the second game, the Tigers defeated Straffordville 4-1. Scholl slugged a home run and Sebastian connected for a triple. Rapping out singles were Daw, Kellington, Adam Corbett and Andrew Baker. Daw went the distance on the mound to get the win. The win put the Tigers into the AA semi-final. The Walton Brewers began the tournament Friday evening by losing 10-9 to the Staffordville Stealth. Matt Shortreed hit a double and single for Walton, with Andrew Van Vliet rapped out a pair of singles. Jeff Robinson hit a double and Scott Cox and Kevin Murray each hit a single. Jeff Smith started on the mound and was relieved by Scott Cox. In the team’s second game, the Brewers were defeated by the Sebringville Sting 7-2. Scott McDonald connected for a triple and Darryl Houston hit a double. Jamie Wicke and Bruce Pearn each rapped out a single. McDonald started on the mound for the Brewers and was relieved by Smith. The loss put the Brewers into the BB semi-final. In other opening round games, Goderich defeated Fullarton 7-2, Belmore downed Melbourne Mercs 5-1, Kitchener beat Melbourne Mile 9-4 and Wingham got past Mitchell. In other games on the winner’s side, Belmore defeated Goderich 14- 1 and Kitchener edged past Wingham 5-4. In other games on the losers’ side, the Mercs beat Fullarton 5-1 and Mitchell doubled up the Mile 6-3. Just one game was played as the rain came and cancelled the second game. In the game that was played, the Barons regained their winning ways as they trimmed the Wroxeter Royals 5-3. New players Steve Hewitt and Casey Boven each had a pair of hits to lead the Barons at the plate. Adam Cronin pitched a strong game on the mound and went the distance to collect the victory. “We were hitting the ball when we needed to,” said veteran player Mike McDonald. He added that centrefielder Mike Bromley made an outstanding catch in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the victory. The second game against the Zurich Rangers was cancelled due to rain and will be played at a later date. The Barons were in Brussels last night (Wednesday) for a game against the Tigers. They host the Fullarton A’s on Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Brussels Tigers host the Belmore Stingers on Friday, beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the Optimist ball park in Brussels. The Walton Brewers hosted the Fullarton A’s on July 24. They hosted the Sebringville Sting last night (Wednesday) at the Walton ball park. They travel to Sebringville on Wednesday for an 8:30 p.m. game against the Sting.By Jim Brown The Citizen Bump!
