Brussels Public School Memory Books available $16.00 each Call 519-887-6856 Descendant brings kind words By Jo-Ann McDonald Members and Comrades of Brussels Legion Branch had a busy week. It began with decorating the float for the Homecoming parade. They gathered at the McDonald home on Wednesday evening and began talking, deciding, assembling, talking, changing minds and a final decision was made and real progress was made in the last hour. A good job was done by Sandra Josling, Lisa Glanville, Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald and Eric and Deb Ross. A second night and more was accomplished. The final product was finally assembled Saturday morning before parade time at the home of Eric and Deb Ross. Thanks to all who helped build it and Rick for pulling it for the parade. Comrades Cecil Moore and Eric and Deb Ross, along with Jeremy Ross and friend, Chris Brown and Devon Josling rode on the float. It was a great float and many compliments were received. Comrade Lisa Glanville did a great job riding horse in the celebrity challenge at the Boothill Bash. She finished sixth out of 10 contestants and was the best lady rider. The food booth at the fastball tournament was a very busy place. There were 30 Comrades needed to help out and some did double shifts. It was a hot and greasy job and the Branch appreciates all the Comrades who did help out. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE BRUSSELS LIONS CLUB 2012 July 27-29 Congratulations to the village of Brussels on a successful 140th Homecoming Celebration Thank you to all the committees and volunteers for your hours of help and dedication throughout the planning and the weekend itself. There are too many people to list who deserve recognition for their contributions but all are greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Bob Richmond, Homecoming Chair Don McNeil, Vice-Chair It rained. Really and truly we had rain here on Friday night, much to the joy and relief of anyone with an interest and investment in green. So smiles and sighs were heard and shared. The many months of planning and the hours of volunteer labour were very evident all weekend here. Homecoming got well underway as Bob Richmond, assisted by Don McNeil, started with the introductions of the committees. Our Mayor Bernie MacLellan offered his supportive words on behalf of Huron County. Bob then introduced an encouraging descendant of our founder – Stephen Charles Ainlay from Schenectady, New York. Kinds words were offered as well as a little history as he reminded us that our Ainley Street is not the correct spelling and perhaps on his way out of town would use his green paint to correct history. It was noted that the original home of the Ainlay family was set on the property where Pat and George Langlois now live. As well Victoria Park was deeded to the village by William Ainlay our founder, to be used as a public place for perpetuity. Good man. If the success of the weekend were judged by smiles, chat and food andrefreshment sales, then 140 was agold medal winner. The weather wasgreat for strolling and mingling andso we did. For me the best part was seeing how our local folks supported the many venues and were the not- so-subtle welcoming committees all over the village. We decided the best way to start any conversation was to say your name, so people wouldn’t take you for someone else. Family resemblances were out in full force as the guessing games began and the stories started to flow. Reunions are a time to remember the past and celebrate the present and the parade set that up very nicely. Over an hour of fun was seen on the parade route that was well organized by “Crusher” and the volunteer fire fellas. Creativity and original thought were evident as well as hours of preparation as the entries passed along. Agriculture, as well as cow pokes, were acknowledged by the vehicles and animals on display for everyone’s enjoyment. Well done everyone. The ball tournament set things in motion on Friday night as the Brussels Tigers won the first game. Play went on all weekend under the guidance of Doug McArter and company. Another local team from Belmore went home with the big prize. For many, the activities at the Optimist house were very entertaining with the volleyball games and the challenges for the horse and riders educational and fun to watch. Anyone with even a whiff of interest in automotive things was amazed on Sunday. Turnberry Streetwas blocked with marvelousvehicles. A strolling view could behad of the 200 or so beautifulvehicles. Two wheels or four, there was one at least that would take your fancy. It was a trip down memory lane and beyond for the countless viewers and gave the owners a chance to highlight their pride and joy. Much chatting about games past, occurred in the tent in Victoria Park as the players of the Tri-County Intermediate teams gathered to recall their glory days. Like all the gatherings of people of like minds, it was fun to see people who were part of your life, only a few years ago. Meanwhile the world was still going on.
