THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 26, 2012.New business opens temporarily in Memorial Hall A new Blyth business: Stitches with a Twist, will be temporarily renting space in the Blyth memorial Hall Reading Room, previously the Blyth Library, due to complications with the owner’s previously intended retail site. Irene Kellins, the business owner, has delayed officially opening the store due to complications during the renovation of the location. She wants to catch the surge of customers that accompanies the Blyth Festival’s operating season and has already missed nearly a month of that time. Council was presented with two choices by Director of Recreation and Facilities Pat Newson to allow Kellins to operate out of the site; force her to pay an approximately $1,500 rezoning fee that would take40 days to process or “not enforce their zoning bylaw for a set period of time at [the] location.” Deputy-Reeve David Riach, who is also a member of the Blyth Business Improvement Area, of which Kellins would become a member of by owning a main street business, said he prefered the second option, however his suggestion was met with skepticism by Councillors James Campbell and Bernie Bailey. “Are we jeopardizing the enforcement of our bylaws by doing this?” Campbell asked. “Is this something that could come back tobite us down the road?” Councillor Brock Vodden explained that this idea was Riach’s originally and that many options were looked at before settling on one of the two options. “We looked at other places, like the buildings [south of the Blyth post office], but those people proved very difficult to reach,” he said. “We tried very hard to look at any other solutions.” Campbell said that previous decisions council made dedicated to enforcing bylaws had been reported on by local news media and saidthat, while he wasn’t challenging it, he was concerned. “I’m just wary of the future implications of this project,” he said. Bailey was concerned about the other building that Kellins was meant to be in, however Reeve Neil Vincent said the township had no right to make judgments about that building since the owner wasn’t there to comment. “We’re not talking about that,” he said. “All we’re talking about is a temporary lease with the store owner JOHN MANUEL BLOK John Manuel Blok of Blyth, passed away at Seaforth Community Hospital after a brief battle with cancer on Sunday, July 15, 2012.
