Blyth baseball Diamonds ‘exceed current utlization’
Blyth Barons team representative
Shawn Bromley had to settle for
North Huron Township Council
saying they would look at concerns
regarding the Blyth baseball
diamonds next year.
Bromley was called upon to
present to council and tell the story
of how the Blyth Barons, a local
Huron County Fastball League team
organization, came to have money
for renovations that never
materialized.
Bromley stated that, after
explaining how his team had a
surplus one year but ended up
spending that money on club
necessities, he felt that upgrading the
fields should be an initiative
spearheaded by the municipality and
helped along by local service groups
and teams and not the other way
around.
Council, however, felt that they
would like to see the project handled
by local groups primarily despite the
fact that the fields are municipally
owned.
Bromley said that, with the loss of
the outfield fence at the arena
diamond and the continuing
degradation of the Radford
Diamond, both at the Blyth
Campground, it wouldn’t be long
before people wouldn’t want to play
there at all. As it stands, the Huron
County Fastball League year-end
tournament likely won’t be
returning due to the condition of the
fields.
Bromley said that the loss of an
opportunity like the tournament was
a rough one as it brings
approximately 160 visitors for a
minimum of two days.
“They spend money, benefit Blyth
and bring tourism to the
community,” he said.
Councillor Bernie Bailey inquired
as to whether the club would be able
to help like they had tried to do
several years earlier, however
Bromley said that they can’t generate
money at the drop of a hat.
“In 2011, we could have paid for
more than half the cost [of the
dugouts],” he said. “We can’t
generate that kind of money fast
though. Our club’s income is based
on performance. If we win, we make
money.”
Recreation and Facilities
Department Director Pat Newson
stated there was no money in 2012
for installing dugouts or replacing
the outfield fence and said that the
current capacity of the diamonds was
more than what was needed.
“[Baseball] is a sport that has
declined in popularity over the past
10 to 15 years,” Newson said in her
report. “Current capacity of the
diamonds exceeds current
utilization.”
Council decided that they would
try and plan for expenses at the
diamonds soon and that the users
group meeting for the diamonds
should be held as soon as possible in
2013 to address any issues with
funding to maintain or upgrade the
park.
