Displays are busily being set up in some of the empty storefronts to complement the town’s celebration. The decorating committee judged the many entrants who signed up for the completion and have announced the winners. In the business category, the Fina Station placed first; Huron Country Hardware, second; George’s to Jo- Ann’s, third; The Citizen, fourth; Continued on page 10 Big winners As preparation for the pending homecoming celebration in Brussels, local stores and homes decorated to show their spirit. Meanwhile hail and heavy rain hit our neighbours. Our understanding of the word drought is getting new consideration. Once again it’s a good thing we don’t control the weather. Picnics to celebrate volunteers were held this month for the 5R’s Thrift Store as well as the horticultural society folks. Rain did not put a damper on the events but a few ants and mosquitoes did. Both these groups depend on their valued volunteers who go about their duties making our community a better place. Perhaps it’s in my mind but a concoction of garlic, water, soap and oil sprayed on the vegetation last week seems to have put a small damper on the activities of the tiny wee mosquitoes living at our place By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY At the Branch Branch open longer for event The Brussels Legion Branch held the executive meeting on Tuesday evening. The regular business was discussed. There were very few reports from the committee chairman, as very little goes on in the summer. There have been repairs accomplished around the Branch and some electrical repairs need to be dealt with. The Branch will contact a member to look into the items that need to be done. Members discussed ideas for the float for the Homecoming parade. They will hopefully put the float together Wednesday evening. The help for the booth has come along nicely, but there are a few spots yet to fill. Any Comrades willing to help, please call the Branch as soon as possible. There are just two catering events this summer and the fish fry events are past the halfway mark with about six left to do. There will be a district sports meeting at the Branch on Aug. 18 and a light lunch will be required. There were no athletes attending the provincial track and field event. Thanks to Comrades Jim Brown and Rick McDonald for finishing the decorating for Homecoming on a very hot Tuesday morning. The fish fry crew had two fish fry events to deal with this weekend. The first was in Seaforth for the Seaforth Agricultural Society. They had a good crowd of 150 enjoy the dinner served up by the Comrades of Branch 218. Helping the Branch on this occasion were Lloyd and Mabel Glanville and Rick and Jo- Ann McDonald. The second fish fry was in Bayfield at the Bluewater Campground. They also had a good crowd of 150 enjoy the dinner. Helping the Branch were Norm Dobson, Deb Caan, Judy Lee and Jo-Ann McDonald. The Branch will have extended hours on the Homecoming weekend. The Branch will be open from 4 - 8 p.m on Friday evening and from noon until 8 p.m. on Saturday evening.
