For the sixth meeting of the
Wawanosh 4-H Pizza Club,
members gathered at Niel Edgar’s
Feed and Seed on July 12 at 9 a.m.
President Ellen Jefferson opened the
meeting with the pledge, then the
club got right to work. Members
scrubbed and pressure washed
Ivomec containers so they could be
recycled safely. Merial supports 4-H
through donating money to the 4-H
group for each Ivomec container
washed and returned for recycling.
Mark Lemieux (a Merial Technical
Sales Rep) also helped with the
work.
Many hands make light work, so
the club was done in no time. The
group then had a snack of ice cream
sandwiches and Ellen led roll call,
which asked members what their
favourite pizza from the club was.
The most popular pizzas were the
New York style pizza, bread pizza
and strawberry dessert pizza. Ellen
then closed the meeting with the
motto.
A huge thank you to Niel Edgar
for collecting the Ivomec containers.
Morris-Turnberry Council willvote again at its next meeting on
whether to further explore the idea
of becoming a candidate site for a
deep geological repository for spent
nuclear fuel.
The motion to move to the next
step of asking the Nuclear Waste
Management Organization to
complete an initial screening of the
municipality was defeated on a tie
vote at the July 10 meeting with
Deputy-Mayor Jason Breckenridge
absent.
The motion came after councillors
had toured the Bruce Power facility
and received an introduction to the
issue of storing used nuclear fuel.
Mayor Paul Gowing noted that
there is no cost to the municipality
in going through the screening
process.
“I feel we should go through the
initial screening,” Gowing said. “Itmight say ‘no’ for us.”But other councillors weren’tconvinced. “I can in no way be in favour of
proceeding any further,” said
Councillor Neil Warwick.
“After viewing that mess up there,
the further they take that waste from
here the better,” said Councillor
David Baker.
Councillor John Smuck said he’d
support proceeding to the next step
only because it would give council
and residents more information in
case a neighbouring municipality
was eventually chosen to host the
repository.
Warwick warned of the public
perception of councillors proceeding
any further. “I think people will get
all worked up because they think
we’ve already made up our minds
and want to ram it down their
throats,” he said. “I think you’re
giving the wrong impression.”
With the tie vote, the motion willbe brought back to the next meeting.***Council passed a motion that ithas no objection to expansion of the
waste treatment works at Turnberry
Estates near Wingham.
However they asked Nancy
Michie, administrator clerk-
treasurer, to find out why they were
being asked to approve extension of
the system when most of the work
seems to be already done. Several
councillors wondered what would
happen if they said they weren’t in
favour of the project.
***
Council passed a motion not to
buy a program that would make the
municipality’s website more
accessible to people with visual
impairments, literacy issues or for
whom English is not their native
tongue, until it is mandated to do
so.
Michie had said the requirement
for such accessibility will begin in2014, but that most municipalities inHuron have already acquired theBrowse Aloud program. Councillorslooked at the yearly tab of $1,395
and argued that they might as well
save that amount until they were
forced to spend it.
***
During the councillors’ reports
portion of the meeting Councillor
Jamie McCallum said he had been
the councillor designated to attend
the graduation ceremony at Blyth
Public School. Though he wasn’t
familiar with the school, the
presentations showed the school had
a long, proud history, he said. “I was
sad to see them lose it.”
