humid conditions and the lack of a

Red flags in health information
Research shows that nearly 80 per
cent of people want food and
nutrition information, but 60 per
cent have trouble finding a reliable
source of nutrition information. Are
you one of them?
With many different media
channels, there is an endless amount
of nutrition information available.
The Public Health Dietitian and the
Huron County Health Unit point out
that not all sources are created equal.
The quality of information varies.
Carmen Kwok, a nutrition intern
from the health unit, says,
“Unfortunately, there is little
regulation when it comes to
providing nutrition information.
This leaves a lot of room for
misinformation and conflicting
messages.”
The Health Unit wants to make
sure that people are getting reliable
and up-to-date nutrition information
from credible sources to stay
healthy. To avoid being a victim of
nutrition misinformation, the Health
Unit suggests the public watch for
these five red flags:
• Offering a quick fix and/or
dramatic results
• Selling a product
• Lists of “good” and “bad” foods
• Simplistic conclusions drawn
from a complex study
• Recommendations based on a
single study or personal stories.
The Health Unit recommends that
you ask these questions when you
are searching for nutrition
information:
• Who is providing the
information? What is the purpose?
• Can you trust the organization?
Is the source endorsed by a health
agency or association you can trust?
• Are they qualified to speak to the
topic? Look for names and
credentials.
• Do they have scientific evidence
to back up their claims? Information
should be based on multiple studies
and a large population, not just
personal opinion.
• Does the information make
sense, or does it seem too good to be
true?
• Is the information relevant to
you? The message may target the
general population or a specific
group of people, make sure the
information fits your need.
• Is the information current?
When was it last updated?
Kwok says, “Credible and up-to-
date sources can provide you with
accurate information and allow you
to make smart decisions about
healthy eating.” The health unit’s
website offers lots of nutrition
information and links to additional
food and nutrition resources
(www.huroncounty.ca/health -
Choose “Food and Nutrition”).
Kwok also suggests EatRight
Ontario (www.eatrightontario.ca)
for easy online access to trusted
nutrition information. Call their toll-
free number (1-877-510-5102) to
speak with a Registered Dietitian
about any nutrition-related topics.
