SportsMites tie then beat Wingham, top Ripley, Belgrave
The Brussels Mite “B” squad had
a minor setback at their home opener
on June 15 when they could only
manage a 4-4 tie against Wingham.
Christopher Pennington struck out
eight, allowing three of the four
runs. Wade Machan, in relief, struck
out four allowing just the one run.
Machan, John Nesbit, Ryan
Jacklin and Allison Stevenson all
scored for the home team in a game
where the bats all but disappeared.
The bats would reappear on June
21 when the team headed to
Wingham to finish their home-and-
home series.
Ryan Jacklin pitched a near-
perfect game with the visitors
handing Wingham a 9-0 loss.
Jaimie Newell, Perrin Patterson
and Anna Fear all scored runs.
The Mites started July, like they
ended June on the road and with a
victory, handing the home squad in
Ripley a 10-6 loss on July 5. Nesbit
and Stevenson combined for eight
strikeouts.
Base hits were by Newell,
Stevenson, Jacklin, Machan, Nesbit
and Darcy Fear.
On July 6 Belgrave came to
Brussels and nearly pulled off the
upset. Ryan Jacklin struggled early,
but managed to get into a groove,
late in the game. Stevenson came in
and preserved a tie going into the
home side’s last at bat where
Patterson took a bases-loaded walk
to send the winning run across the
plate. Several players had base hits
including Machan’s grand slam that
got the Brussels team back into the
game in the late innings.

Blyth took on Brussels Saturday afternoon in the finals of
the annual U8 soccer tournament held in Blyth. While the
Village of Blyth buzzed with Campvention and the first
annual Buskerfest, soccer action was coming fast and
furious just south of town as the tournament started and
finished on Saturday. (Jim Brown photo)
