SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED BUY? SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED North Huron Township Council decided to wait and gather some more information regarding its strategic planning process after being told the process wasn’t where Chief Administrative Officer Gary Long felt it should be. However, through contrasting North Huron to other municipalities through documents outlining their processes councillors felt they were at a comfortable place. “Compared to other municipalities I think we’re right on track,” Councillor James Campbell said. One suggestion that was made was to have a third party negotiator brought in to keep the program on track and while Councillor Brock Vodden said that it was a great idea, not all of council agreed. “I’m not ready to bring anyone in on this, regardless of the cost,” Councillor Bernie Bailey said. Councillor Archie McGowan stated he felt council should focus on three or four goals at most. “Council needs some focus on these issues,” he said. “This isn’t the staff’s job. We need to look at our plan and prepare for the next 15 or 20 years. I think if we really drill down and find out what the next three big things we need to accomplish are, we could have this taken care of.” Vodden responded by saying it’s very hard for someone inside an organization to try and mediate anything, especially the kind of process strategic planning requires. “It’s hard to work on a structure from within,” he said. “We need someone from outside to look at the practice from a practical point of view. We need people who can help us clarify what we’re working on and I don’t think we’ve made enough progress in the past four or five sessions to justify not getting that.” Reeve Neil Vincent said that the plan isn’t an easy thing to pin down. “A strategic plan isn’t about where we are or even necessarily where we’re going, but it’s about where we want to go and how we’re going to get there,” he said. “The plan on how to get there is the only thing that is working for our strategic planning at this time.” Council decided to push on with its efforts to create a strategic plan that reflects the wants and needs of the township without third party assistance.
