Changes, concert planned for Walton TransCan
The Lee family hosted many of the
volunteer helpers that head
committees in charge of the many
facets of the TransCan motocross
races. There are many changes being
implemented this year, with major
changes to the track, start and finishlines. The camping for the amateursand pros are changing areas. Many
new innovations and exciting
activities are being planned. They
announced the extra great news of a
concert planned for the Friday
evening with Jason Blaine
headlining the concert. Jason has
been on the charts since 2002 and his
latest song “Cool” is in the top 20 on
the country charts. The group had a
tour of the area and Brett Lee
pointed out where the changes will
be. Discussions and questions on
some of the changes followed and
then a delicious dinner was enjoyed
by all. TransCan is only a month
away! It will be held the week ofAug. 14-19.I attended the 54th annual
Beuerman reunion on Sunday. It has
been held at the Brodhagen Hall for
the last 45 years or so. It was nice to
see many of the relatives, although it
was a smaller crowd than usual,
around 40. We enjoy a delicious pot
luck meal and then go around the
room and every family tells what’s
being going on in their lives the past
year. The family lost no members
this past year. The oldest surviving
original Beuerman, by marriage, of
our clan, is Malinda Beuerman of
Seaforth. Plans for the 55th reunion
were made with extra special
activities discussed. The Glanville family, descendantsof Harold and Tillie Glanville,
celebrated their 60th reunion on the
weekend. They gathered at the
Winthrop ball park pavilion with 131
attending. Lisa Glanville is the
president, Jackie Glanville is
secretary and Doris Hood is the
treasurer of the group. They have
someone in charge of crafts. They
vote for new people every year. The
smaller children were kept busy with
crafts and others spent time flying
kites. A potluck meal, with plenty of
food, was enjoyed by all. Relatives
attended from Manitoba, Manitoulin
Island, Kingston and across Ontario.

FROM WALTON
The weather report didn’t call for freezing

some fun pretending they were frozen during a game of freeze tag on July 6. (Denny Scott photo)
Knights return from Eastern Canada
Returning from a trip to the east
coast a couple of weeks ago are Brad
and Christine Knight. Brad had to be
in Ottawa to attend the Clerks and
Treasurers Conference for a few
days and then took a few days of
holidays. They made the 12-hour
drive to St. John, New Brunswick to
visit with sister Joanne and Weldon
Black, Andrew and Allison. They
enjoyed the great warm weather we
had enjoyed for a couple of days and
then the usual Maritime weather set
in. It was Andrew’s graduation from
Grade 12 and they were able to
celebrate with him. They decided to
take the drive around Fundy Bay, but
the foggy weather of the east coast
made for lousy sightseeing. They
came home via the U.S. and found it
an interesting drive.
Our get-well wishes go out to
Phyllis Mitchell. She is recovering
well from a fall. We also wish Ernie
Lewington a full recovery as he has
been hospitalized for a few days last
week. He is feeling much better and
we hope he continues on the road to
recovery.
There was a wonderful turnout for
the buck and doe for Krista
Shortreed and Adam Verkley. The
event was held at the Listowel
Agricultural Building. The wedding
party put together a nice evening
with many great door prizes, music
and lunch. The wedding will be held
in August.
Congratulations to a group of five
celebrating family birthdays with a
party at the Walton Hall. The
Finlayson clan gathered to celebrate
Bryan’s 65th, Brenda’s 60th,
Bonnie’s 40th, Ben’s 30th and Kay
Hesselwood’s 80th. The clan
enjoyed a fun evening at the hall
with extended family members and
many friends.
Warm weather good
for corn, soya crops
Well it is no doubt that the corn
was knee high by July! There is
some corn out there that is between
six-and-eight-feet high in places.
The heat has really made the corn
shoot up. The soybeans are doing
very well also and some are at mid-
thigh height. We can only hope the
good growing weather continues
with showers when needed.
It has been an interesting week for
weather. The hot and humid days
created flash thunderstorms that
gave a little rain in some places and
more than a little rain on others. We
needed the rain, but some places
received a lot more than necessary.
We can be thankful our area is not
suffering the drought or the
flooding or the extreme heat of the
U.S.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Dianne Blake, Lorne
Glanville, Brad Knight, Allan Carter,
Emily Mitchell, Sean Mitchell,
Jasmin Roth, Russell Pryce, Steve
Fritz, Richard Gerber, Mitchell
Ryan, Devon McCutcheon, Lorna
Fraser, Pete Martene, Neil Mitchell,
Melanie Kirkby and Brenda
Finlayson. Happy birthday to all.
Homecoming only
two weeks away
Homecoming is just two weeks
away and are you ready? The
Homecoming committee has met 12
times to plan an exciting weekend
for the people of Brussels, former
and present, to come home to enjoy.
The brochures should have arrived in
your mailbox this past week, so now
you can plan your weekend and see
what, when and where events are
being held.
They even have a few surprises
planned for the parade, so they hope
everyone is getting excited. A parade
can only be successful if there is lots
of participation, so the committee is
hoping everyone is busy getting their
floats ready. Bands, horses, dancers
and of course floats. Children
decorating their bikes and riding in
the parade will receive a little
something for their efforts, so
remember, red and white, black and
burlap, and go Western. The start of
the parade is at the arena and
entrants are to start arriving at 10:30
for line up. The parade committee
with help from the Brussels Fire
Department will organize everyone.
The decorating committee is busy
getting the town decorated and they
will be at the Farmers’ Market for
the next few Fridays. Drop by and
pick up your bows, braids and hats
from the ladies. Don’t forget to
register your business or your home
for the best decorated business or
home competition with Rene. Prizes
support your local businesses.
The Optimists are organizing the
volleyball tournament that begins on
Friday night and runs until Sunday
when the finals will be played. Each
of the 12-14 teams will play three
sets a game and earn points towards
