The Citizen
North Woods just a new chapter in Grey Township
By Alison Terpstra
Teachers, parents, guests and the
last, Grade 8 graduating class of
Grey Central Public School. I would
first like to begin by saying what an
honour it is to be chosen by my
peers to be the last Grade 8
valedictorian of Grey Central.
The year Grey Central opened was
probably the year some of your
parents or grandparents started
kindergarten. As the years have
evolved Grey Central has become
the cornerstone of our community.
Not only a place where surrounding
families have their children
educated, but rooted in the core of
the community where friendships
were developed and community
families were brought together with
one common bond. In our small and
amazing class of 13 students there is
one statistic that I would like to
share with you tonight. Kevin
Deitner started Kindergarten the
year Grey Central was opened in
1969 and tonight, Kevin’s youngest
daughter Tiffany will be in the last
Grade 8 graduating class of Grey
Central. That just proves that the
community that started the school
are dedicated families that are proud
to be in the community of Grey
Township.
Take a look around. Can you
believe it was 10 years ago that we
started kindergarten? I am sure we
can all agree that the hall seemed
bigger and the days seemed longer
back then. All of those years we
were just learning the basics to life
like reading, writing and arithmetic.
But at that age we never looked
further beyond that point. What life
really meant. What friendship really
is. We made friends that were
always there for us. Discovering that
friendships isn’t a big thing, but a
million little things.
Grade 8 came in the blink of an
eye. But the memories will always
be with us. From the marker wars
and water fights, to picking the
small strawberries in the soccer
fields and taking a stroll through the
environmental learning grounds has
made memories for a lifetime. Our
class has done and been through
everything together. We have had
adventures from places like the zoo
all the way to Georgian Bay. We
have discovered, don’t cry because
it’s the end, smile because it’s a new
beginning. We will never forget each
other and our friendships we have
made.
Our year would not have been as
great as it was without our teacher
Mr. Herden. Mr. Herden is not just a
regular teacher. He is something
special. Something you don’t get
every year from his organic hand
cream addiction to his city
vocabulary. Yes Mr. Herden it’s the
bush not the woods. For the whole
year Mr. Herden has been teaching
us so we thought we would give it a
whirl and teach him how us country
folks do it around here. One time we
taught him how to use a deer call.
Speaking of deer call, boy is it hot
up here or is it just me? Does that
bring up any memories Mr. Herden?
A couple of my friends and I were
shopping the other day and found
something that reminds us of you.
As I have shuffled through the
deck of all of these memories I have
came to realize that this graduation
isn’t only about us. It’s about
everyone in this room. We have been
the clay that our parents,
grandparents, teachers and even our
siblings have been molding. Some
of our older siblings that are starting
to drive have to read the driver’s
manual before they write the test. I
feel that this is what our parents,
grandparents and teachers have done
for us. Our parents for the first four
years of our lives taught us right
from wrong. Disciplining us and
teaching us our morals and values.
Then they sent us off to big kid
school where we started another
chapter in our driver’s manual. Here
in big kid school we are taught how
to get along with others, how to
make lasting friendships and how to
problem solve. Tonight we passed
the driver’s test. So I say where are
the keys to the car? Even though
Grey Central is closing and opening
to North Woods Elementary School
I believe that this is just a new
chapter for Grey Township. Some
things are going to change but
traditions and memories will be here
forever. Change should be looked at
as an opportunity just like this new
chapter that we were about to enter.
Change, it’s the unknown, it’s
different and maybe even a little
scary, but at the same time, it’s a new
opportunity, an opportunity to meet
new friends, an opportunity to
discover new things and an
opportunity to find out what we
want to do in this big world. As I
look around this room tonight I
would like to take the opportunity to
Grey Central’s graduates
