Do not depend upon teachers to educate you ... follow your own bend, pursue your curiosity bravely, express yourself, make your own harmony… In the end, education, like happiness, is individual, and must come to us from life and from ourselves.” This is a quote from Will Durant. I think what he was trying to say is that a good education comes from within ourselves. We could have the greatest teachers in the world, but we still have to depend on ourselves to take in what we have been taught and apply it. Tonight, we graduate from East Wawanosh Public School after 10 years of elementary education. Over the years, our teachers have stressed to us that it is our habits and attitudes that will decide where we go and what we will take with us from any experience. Over the last 10 years at East Wawanosh, we have had some amazing experiences. We’ve been on overnight trips to Camp Celtic in Lion’s Head and Jump at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. We’ve also been to Casa Loma and Medieval Times in Toronto, and who can forget the annual visits to the Wawanosh Nature Centre? We’ve had the opportunity to do some awesome plays like last year’s Grease, and numerous Christmas concerts. A special thanks goes out to the sports coaches for having hope in our teams even if we don’t always come out on top. Going to school in a rural community means that we have gone through school with almost the same people every year. This is a good thing and a bad thing...we know each other really well and maybe the reason why, at times, we can be a little challenging as a group. We have also been able to make some great memories together. Through the years we have attended up to 10 school fairs together, marching down the hill from the church to the arena, sometimes biking on our incredibly decorated bikes too. Every year there has been one thing that I don’t think we will ever forget. I think we could all say that pranks pulled after health class were pretty memorable, but this year, by far, it had to be Garet getting his finger stuck in a desk. I will never forget the look on his face when we were unable to pull his East Wawanosh’s graduating class East Wawanosh Public School held its last graduation ceremony on Monday, June 25.
